Indy Brian's Theater

Hi everyone.

Started the main portion of my build today. The room has been sheetrocked and walls primed for awhile now. Just started on my stage today. Need to buy sand tomorrow and then put on the sheeting for the floor.

I just wanted to say thanks to CJ and his great pictures from his Harvest Ridge Theater Build. I copied much of the design of his stage. I decided to only go with one step on my stage.

My original plan was to have in wall speakers and a screen painted on the wall, but you can see from the position of the door the only option to do this was put them up above the door. Not a good option. I then thought about external speakers mounted up there and aimed down, but did not like that either. I am now building the stage and going to construct a DIY acoustically transparent screen and put the speakers behind it on the stage.

You may also notice I now need to raise the outlet box and the AV box on the back wall. Always something!

Pretty sure I am going to go with the Epson 8350 and have not decided on any other equiptment yet.

Also thanks to everyone that have posted their build. I have learned a great deal on this site.

Watch for the continued progress and questions!!

Brian

Hey, your not allowed to start posting pics *after* the drywall -- you are already 50% done! Looking forward to more pics...
Moogie I have plenty of pics of the studs and where my wires are. I'll dig few up for you, LOL!

Used Mason sand because it was $.70 cents cheaper than the play sand. Made multiple trips to Lowes. I only bought 8 bags at a time so I did not overload my Pathfinder. Garbage bags to line the back, and left over 4 mil plastic for the front.

Turns out I have 3 bags extra!! UGH!! Now I even have to drag the stuff back to Lowes.

I have the deck ready to go for the top. Was going great using the router to round over the edges until I mover the clamp! Little bit of a gouge that will be hidden by the carpet. Going to work on the deck for the first step tonight.

Ordered the Pioneer VSX-1120-K from Best Buy today also.

After doing some work tonight I decided that I might want a deck for my second row of seats.

Anyone have any input for the minimum width of my deck? One of the Berkline seats says it takes 72" of wall space fully reclined. Would it be OK for the deck to be shorter?

I wanted to have my first row at 12' for a 100" diagonal screen so that is going to drive my deck dimensions.

Thanks for the replies.

Is that 100" for 16:9 or 2.35 screen? 12' back seems on the plus side of plenty far back even for a 100" 16:9 screen. IMHO scootch closer or go with a larger screen.

My brother in laws first row is about 12' back from 135" 2.35 screen and it never feels too big. If you've got room to play, put your chairs where you want them and get the projector and play around with screen sizes before you build your screen. Just use the wall or some butchers paper or sheets or something till you find a size you are sure you are comfortable with. Then give yourself some time to get used to it...cause at first, everything is going to seem huge.

*Edit*

Are you IndyBrian because you are from Indianapolis by chance? If so, you should check out some of the other Hoosier builds!

Thanks for the reply that is the kind of reviews I was looking for.

I am stuck with a max of 100" diagonal due to the design of the stage and wall bump in.

Also found this current thread with some good info in seating distance:

Yep Indianapolis it is!
Well, well, well. That stage look mighty good!

Good start on the thread, but I have to the the other poster's comment....you've deprived us of over 50% of the heartache by starting it after drywall is complete!

In any event, it's going to look good. How about posting a floor plan with some dimensions as well as proposed seating locations marked.

My wife originally wanted a medium sized screen that was not too large. I on the other hand wanted a screen like Wh00ly's...XL! I hung a sheet where the screen was to be and projected a 100" image on it. She liked it, but said it was a little small. I dialed in the 141" edge to edge screen and we both thought it might be a bit too large. After watching about 10 minutes of a movie (Apollo 13), we fell in love.

My screen is 130" wide (141" diagonal) and is 2.35:1 aspect ratio. My first row eyeballs are at 11'6" when reclined. The back row is at 18' when reclined. I would not go back. Folks on the forum will say you can't go too large. Originally, I thought that was bunk. Now I'm a believer!

Keep up the progress, and I'm glad that something I did was of use to you in your build!

The footprint for my Berklines is 32" deep. This does not change when they recline. A few inches either way will be the minimum required. If you have headroom constraints, you could just build a short riser under the seating. If you can go higher, then use the Riser Height Calculator sticky at the top of this forum to determine the height of the riser needed.

Do not forget to factor in the height of the projector when mounted if you are mounting it to the ceiling.

Here is a pre drywall picture. You can see the loop of speaker wire hanging for the surround speaker.

Good news is I prewired more than I needed. Bad news is this needs to be two stud bays to the right. Wish me happy fishing!!

Sorry about that, i hadnt looked that closely at the picture, I see that you are pretty limited to screen size because of the recessed area.

Thanks for the replies.

With 100" screen you have plenty of room to move your first row forward if you need more clearance for your riser. From what i've seen most people like the first row at 2 to 3 times the screen height. So if its a matter of being cramped in the back row vs. being a foot closer to the screen, I say give yourself the room you need in the back.

Finished putting the deck on the stage last night.

Wife said it turned out nice.

Framing for the deck for second row of seats. Off to Lowes today for insulation and sheeting.

I only went with a 2x6 for the riser. This will be just a bit lower than the riser calculator recommends. Turns out my concrete slab has more humps in it than a herd of camels. Always something extra to take care of.

I do not plan on having any butt kickers in my seats, but I put in a chase and outlets just in case. For the chase I used a left over piece of PVC from the home vacuum system I had lying around. The back wall is open to a storage area and I have two extra runs of speaker wire back there. There is also a chase from that room to the AV closet.

I had to tear into the wall on the left to add another switch on the wall for the step light. Looks like a bit of sheet rock repair in my future also.

woah woah woah...you are moving way too fast....first you show up with the drywall already done...and now the stage has decking?! You need to slow take...take a few months off...just dable here and there....you are making the rest of us look bad!!!

In all seriousness the stage is looking good! Did you just back cut the front board to get it to wrap like that?

You may already know this but if you want to make your pictures show up larger you use

and they will show up like this.

I guess I am a man on a mission, that and no work this week.

Sherwin Williams has a 40% off sale starting Friday, so paint goes up tomorrow. We have the colors picked out. I copied them from another theater on here, can't remember who now, but I will be sure to give credit when I post the Picture.

Yes, I back cut the board for the curve. Had a bunch about an 1.5" apart. The board was still pretty hard to bend so I went back and did a few more that were deeper but spread them out much more. I tried to do some math to figure out the curve by failed, so in the end I just winged it.

Ah, a fellow Hoosier. I don't live in Indianapolis any more, but I grew up in there in Irvington (east side). Moved to StL about 15 years ago when I graduated college.

Interesting fact is that Hoosier is a derogatory term here that means '*******'. It took me a while to get used to it. We would be talking with people, and they would say so-and-so was a Hoosier. My response was naturally "Oh, they're from Indiana as well?"

My wife still gets a good laugh every time we go back to visit.. Everything is Hoosier this and Hoosier that...

Speaking of Indy, if any of you guys up there know someone looking for a great house, I have one on the market in Cumberland (far east side). ~100k for >1500 sq ft and in absolutely beautiful condition. PM me and I'll pass along the listing. Hell, I'll even throw in a finders fee if you get someone to buy

STORY OF MY LIFE!!!!

40% off paint is a good deal. I'm glad you're going with a place like Sherwin Williams over a big box store. You wont regret it. Costs a little more upfront sometimes, but you get better paint and better support.

Finished the riser this evening.

Insulation installed and deck was glued and screwed down.

Little bit of pink left over from insulating prior to sheetrock and picked up a roll of white today.

Need to put the trim back on now that the riser is done.

I'm going to be a painter tomorrow!

Oh and I really need to buy a truck. The Pathfinder really does not cut it to haul 4x8 sheets of anything.
