Looking for information about the InFocus X1?

You've come to the right thread!

There seems to be a flood of new X1 owners appearing in the forum (again). Since there has been some backlash in the forum at the number of new threads started by people looking for basic information, I thought I'd start this thread in hopes of catching the attention of new owners.

Please use this thread to point new (and old) X1 owners at previous threads and resources that do a good job of explaining things that X1 owners ask about.

Please refrain from posting questions and other chatter in this thread.

It is my hope that this thread may become a reference for X1 users which will point to information and previous answers, and not be filled with new questions and other chatter.

If you have a question, please add it to an existing related thread that you find through a search, or start a new thread if you can't find a related one. The search function here at AVS Forum is VERY useful for finding previous posts that have already covered a topic you are interested in. So as the moderators here have requested :

Please use the Search function here at AVS Forum before starting a new thread!

And before posting... particularly before posting prices or links to other vendors, read the Forum FAQ for rules about posting and some links to good general information.

I will also take the liberty of linking to the external FAQ that I maintain:

1. X1 and return policy/demo info:

www.Infocus.com (10 day demos)

Best Buy has 30 day returns without restocking- but you have to confirm with management first (see this email form GreggPenn):

"Here is my response from Best Buy corporate. I received it on 5/18/03. Certainly, the policy regarding the X1 could have changed since then, but here was their reply on 5/18/03.

===================================================

Gregg,

Thank you for replying. I'm Sandy with Customer Care.

The InFocus video projector is a 30-day return product. There is a restocking fee if there is anything missing from the box.

Thank you for sharing your comments with Best Buy. Please don't hesitate to contact us with additional questions or concerns.

Best wishes from Best Buy,

Sandy and the Customer Care Team

===================================================

The "comments" which Sandy refers to above were somewhat extensive. Best Buy's first response only provided Best Buy's general return policy. In it, I could not determine if the X1 was considered a computer peripheral.

A second request produced similar results. I had to press until I got the specific answer provided above. I "commented" that my effort to receive this response should not have been so difficult!

As stated in a previous post, I had a store employee indicate a 30-day demo on my receipt. I did this for insurance. I returned the unit after 28 days and received a complete refund."

All Bob Williams posts. Bob is the InFocus engineer who designed the X1. Look particularly at his posts dating from 10-15-02 and newer which address many X1 questions.

The single most important thing to know about care and maintenance for your X1 is that you must keep the filter screens in the lamp module clean, in order to avoid obstructing airflow to the lamp. Failure to do so could shorten the life of the lamp.

InFocus states that you should clean the lamp module filter screens every 200 to 250 hours.

Here are step by step instructions (with photos):
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...58#post2952258

Here's a link to the InFocus recommendation and their instruction sheet on how to clean the screens:
http://www.infocus.com/service/x1/fa...on=1&cat=vents

This is also documented in the back of your projector manual, with details on how to remove the lamp module.

Rainbows are the common name given to an effect sometimes seen with single-chip DLP projectors such as the X1.

The moderators here request that you DO NOT start a new rainbow-related thread. Instead, there is now an Official Rainbow Thread. If you have something to say about rainbows, add it to this one:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...hreadid=334125

Here's an older rainbow thread:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...hreadid=324164

Here is a link to another older rainbow thread that is particularly useful for someone who has never seen a rainbow, because it has a couple of simulations that attempt to illustrate them:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...hreadid=260772

And here is a link to a thread that discusses using a filter to reduce rainbows:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...hreadid=252687

Here's a thread and poll on whether Owners notice rainbows:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...hreadid=261372

Here's a thread and poll on whether Guests notice rainbows:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...hreadid=306132

If you do a search you'll find other threads here that also discuss rainbows.

You should judge for yourself whether rainbows are going to be an issue, don't let someone else's experience dissuade you because not everyone sees or is bothered by rainbows. The other prevalent technology (LCD) also has drawbacks; there are no perfect answers, particularly at this price range. Even if you are able to see rainbows, many people find they are occasional and not a significant issue that would prevent them from enjoying their X1 projector. There are also adjustments you can make to minimize rainbows, and people's awareness of rainbows can decrease over time.

There are loads and loads of happy X1 owners. You could become one of them, but if you have any concerns about rainbows there's no reason not to try the X1 for yourself. Be an informed consumer and either demo an X1 in your home or somewhere else before buying, or purchase from somewhere with a good return policy.

Bump.

Loving my X1 so far.

Unless the search finds EXACTLY what I'm looking for I'm gonna have to post something new. :(

Another vote for STICKY!!!

-----

P.S. How about a seperate X1 section?

-----

Note: If you did not realized it, the X1 is a 4:3 projector that has a 16:9 mode. BUT in 16:9 mode, the X1 still projects a 4:3 screen with less than totally black bars (basically a giant 4:3 screen with normal letterbox bars). Look into/consider black masking while planning your HT.

We have too many sticky threads as it is, and I don't want to start having sticky posts for every popular projector. I have gone ahead, though, and added a hyperlink in the Forum FAQ thread that points to this thread.

Since the Forum FAQ thread is permanently sticky-posted, you will always be able to find this thread by visiting the FAQ. Thanks.

 Thanks for the link Scott!

We'll try to keep this thread "FAQ-worthy". :)

Thank you, technut Canada, for all the hard work you put into your X1 FAQ. Hopefully your hard work will inspire other members to create FAQ's for other popular projectors.

Just did the filter clean. At first was intimidating but it was actually very simple. Luckily I did, one side of the filter was totally blocked with dust. Was skeptical to use the vacuum. So used a lens glasses shammy. Really picks up on those dust particles and is not abrasive. Noticed some dust inside the bulb but didnt want to use a vacuum. Got the fiancee's blow dryer which does have a high power cool blow setting. After 5 minutes it was clean as a whistle. Noticed that the a blob area on lower right of my screen is now uniform and clean. It used to have a dust blob area since I bought the projector. It doesnt show on 16:9 but when projecting a 4:3 picture it can be clearly seen projecting a uniform windows desktop. Not visible when playing movies. Now its GONE!!!! Thanks again Technut.
