Infocus x1 "whir"

398 Views 5 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  cygnet74
I turned on my projector yesterday and was greeted by a loud whir that wouldnt go away. It kind of sounds like those three loud whirs that normally would go away when you start the projector. Is this the color wheel? The picture seems fine but I turn it off because I'm afraid something is deathly wrong. Any ideas as to what the problem is and should I fix or buy a new display?

I doubt that you're still under warranty. (At 4-5k hours I can almost guarantee it - ;) but you might have an extension, many of us do; it was free a couple of years ago. But it doesn't cover labor.)

It probably is the colorwheel. Other threads have talked about it. I have noticed it a couple of times (our X1 is @ just over 2k) but it has always gone away.

It may not be important but have you cleaned your filters? And if you do find any dust don't use spray in the X1 as it can spread dust onto the DMD chip. You wouldn't like that. (do a search on "dust blobs.)

Good luck - you could contact Infocus tech help. They might have a solution if it doesn't go away.

EDIT: Edward below is right. If the colorwheel is permanently bad it's time to upgrade. You might even get something for the X1 "as-is" (for parts) on eBay. Be sure and state what you think is wrong with it though.

If it doesn't go away, it may be more cost effective to upgrade to a new projector. You definitely got your money's worth on the Infocus with 4-5K hours. Usually, it means replacing the color wheel which according to Infocus is a $500 repair.
my X1 had been doing this for about a month. it was no longer under warranty so i never did anything about it. tonight, just as mace windu had arrived to arrest palpatine CRACK POP SIZZLE!!! the screen went black and the projector wound to a stop. i walked over to it, smelled burning electronics and saw black scorch marks along the vent. :( "he's dead, jim."

i've got my eye on the Optima H31, now.
