Insteon

Well, I had planned on using Lightolier Compose PLC dimmers, until I got prompted to think about Insteon (thanks Mark aka BritinVA!) controllers.

It appears Smarthome is the only real source for these?

Any particulars I should be aware of?

My forum search revealed that as of a couple of months ago, there was no "direct" remote control solution for these, and that I could use X10 as a way to control them... is that still correct?

Thanks.

I just installed a bunch of insteon dimmers and relays in my place. I'm actually just using them with X10 right now, but the setup has been quite simple. I'm thinking about getting the insteon RF plug ins so that I can get a full fledged insteon network going.

Right now the only issue I see is a limited number of control options for insteon. They don't have the insteon equivalent of the handy X10 RF wall switches or IR to X10 converter. This isn't too much of an issue because the insteon devices can be given X10 addresses. However, because the insteon RF repeaters only repeat insteon signals (not X10), you do loose some of the utility.

Thats because SmartHome desinged and manufactures them.
Right, there are no pure Insteon remotes or receivers. They only have the controllers. Remotes will be out in Q3 if they meet their schedule. Personally, I'm waiting for an IR receiver so I can control my stuff.

You can control the Insteon devices in X-10 mode. There's an X-10 IR receiver that's pretty popular with others, something like IR 453. Don't quote me on that model number. Cocoontech or other HA forums have this info.
Woo woo...

Does this mean there is a better solution than getting an IR-543?

I am about to purchase a universal remote with an IR-543 to control my switchlincs. Should I be waiting??
The IR543 works fine and is only 20.00. You can get the IR543AH and pay 100.00 (more house codes), but if you're only using it for a HT room, just get the IR543. You can always replace it later if need be.
