Don't really expect anything to come of it (studios will be changelling this I'm sure), but it's nice to know that someone's out there trying.

From DVDFILE.com

"Quick bit: new DVD format?

The unfortunately named Matsushita Electrical Industrial has just released a new DVD format they claim can store a whopping 50Gb of data on a mere single side, versus a mere 5Gb on a current DVD. The company (let's just call them MEI for short) plans on previewing the format all this week during the International Symposium on Optical Memory, being held in Taiwan.

MEI is touting this new format with an eye towards High-Definition, and with a 50Gb capacity, about 4 hours of programming could be stored on a single side - much like our current DVD format, only this could be 4 hours of HD programming, not SD (standard definition.) Of course, we've heard plenty on possible DVD-HD formats before, so we'll see how support for MEI's format shapes up in the future... "
