First, I am in no way a newbie... I sold HDTV's for about 3 years... but that was about a year ago. So don't worry that this is just some stupid little problem that a newb would have...

I have a Hitachi 57S500 and an older Toshiba DVD player... not prog scan but has component outs.

The rushmore DVD is 2.35:1... but when I pop it in... It is MUCH wider than 2.35:1... Probably 3.?+/1. And is clearly stretched out... everybody is clearly too wide.

If I then set it to 4:3 Expanded... It gives the picture more height... so it is more viewable, but It still seems wider than 2.35:1.

ANOTHER BIG PROBLEM I'M NOTICING....

When I pause a movie and change the aspect ratio on my TV... I notice that I am loosing some picture. When I have it set on 4:3... I see the full picture (small of course becuase of side and top bars)... but when I then set it to 16:9 standard... I loose a bit off the edges... maybe only 3/4 or 1'' of picture... but I definately loose some picture.

In comparison... it seems like the 4:3 Expanded picture (where it cuts a little off the edges and top to zoom in) has the EXACT same ammount of picture (as far as what is cut off the edges) as the 16:9 Standard... but the 16:9 standard of course is a wider picture.

I just don't get it... You shouldn't loose any picture with the 16:9 standard; should you? Add this mess with the rushmore debocle and I'm starting to think something is wrong with my tv.

Any thoughts?

No wonder there is so much confusion when people are buying TV's.

I will start out by saying I am in no way an expert but I will try to help

Back to the problem, you are most likely watching a non anamorphic copy of Rushmore, the Buena Vista release is non anamorphic & the Criterion is, see
here

Here is an explanation of an anamorphic DVD.

Is the stretch mode problem with all sources or only with this DVD?

You may have a lot of over scan.

Look here ,page 24 explains your stretch modes

interesting... Indeed I have the non-anamporhic copy so... 4:3 expanded does look better than 16/9 standard. ... kinda annoying I didn't realize I had to consider all these things....

... That explains the rushmore happening... But what about the fact that when I watch any movie in 16/9 standard... it looses a small ammount of picture off the edges?

Again, i switch the tv to 4:3 standard (where there are grey bars on the sides);; and I see a full picture.... but when I go 16:9 standard, I notice some of the edges have been croped.

Is this normal?

Just think how your ex customers feel. ;)

All TV's have a small amount of over-scan built in. If it gets over 5% that starts to be excessive. Computer monitors have zero over-scan.

To watch movies which come in all kinds of widths and several storage methods you need to know which aspect mode to use with the 16x9 (1.77:1 aspect ratio) screen on your TV.

The major storage methods are Anamorphic Widescreen, Letterbox Widescreen, and Academy Standard (4x3 or Pan&Scan).

There is a link at the top of the topic list for this forum that discusses this issue. The link at the bottom of my message goes into detail for two model lines of the Samsung DLP sets.

There is another long shot you might want to check because it can cause some strange things to happen to the image. Make sure that your DVD player has been set to work with a wide screen TV. Every DVD player that I've used was defaulted to work with 4x3 screens.

Enjoy.
