'Interim' receiver

Sorry if this is a little long-winded. I'd like to solicit some advice on receiver selections. I currently have an Onkyo TX-DS777 (THX 5.1 receiver, 2000 vintage) with Klipsch Reference series speakers and an Outlaw LFM-1 sub. I would like to upgrade to a more modern 7.1 receiver for a couple of reasons: my room is conducive to using rear surrounds, and I enjoy multi-channel music as well as movies and would like a surround mode like Dolby ProLogic IIx which is well-regarded for adding ambience to stereo sources. I find the standard DSP modes (theater, hall...) useless.

I'm looking for something with more sound quality than bells and whistles,

H/K is good.

Marantz delivers excellent sound quality.

Refurbs at many price points at this very good authorized online dealer: http://www.accessories4less.com/
