I've got a shelf full of Laserdiscs and a pretty fine Pioneer Elite player, and wonder whether the internal composite to HD upscaler in my Epson 3020 is as good as a cheap outboard scaler? An outboard scaler would let me use the S-video output of the player (Epson 3020 only has composite), but would it really be worth the money?

One possible answer would be to get an S-video to composite converter, available on e-bay at $40 to $50.

Annoyingly, that's the price point at which the Up-scalers start.

There is this EtekCity Video Converter Upscaler available on E-Bay for $41 plus postage/tax.

At least it is in the USA and does not have to be sent from China so it can be sent back.

It has two possible outputs on HDMI, 720p and 1080p giving you a choice to leave the higher frequency scaling to the Epson

Yes, I do think that S-video output is noticeably better than Composite (Less artefacts, more colour stability)

Anyway for $50, who's complaining?
