On some receivers I see some IR in/out ports on the back. How are these used exactly?

Is this for placing the receiver out of sight and using an ir extension cable to control the receiver from a different place?

And what does the "IR out" do? Can it be used to pass the IR signal to other components near the receiver?

IR IN: Allows the AVR to be driven by a remote sensor. Typical use case is in a closed door cabinet and the remote sensor is mounted outside, as the AVR's front panel sensor cannot receive IR signals through the solid door.
IR OUT: Allows the AVR's front panel sensor, to receive IR signals for other components and then are wired cascaded together
