is 120hz worth it?

I'm looking at the Samsung LN40A550 and the LN40A650. The only notable difference between the two is 120hz and of course the 650 is another $400.

If you have to ask, I think you already know the answer... I went through the same thing. Buy the A550, you won't regret it! If you buy from Fry's, the difference is actually $500, and you can get a 5 year service plan that includes a loaner for under the average going rate online. The gimmicky motionflow and glossy screen on the A650 certainly aren't worth it. The 5:5 pulldown @ 120hz is nice, as is the better contrast for even deeper blacks, but overall it just wasn't worth it to me. The A550 is a heck of a performer for the price! It has the best color of the 40" sets that I looked at and it has no ghosting, smearing, flashlights, or other visual artifacts to speak of. The only thing that is mediocre on it is the sound. It's better with the EQ tune, but still not as good as some of the other sets I've heard. Route it through a home theater though and it's damn near perfect!

Yeah what i liked about the samsung is the fast response time since im going to mainly be playing xbox 360 on it. Plus I have a surround sound 5.1 system already so the sound isn't an issue.
well here's the thing--many have pointed out that 120hz and AMP are two different things. they may well be--i can not say either way but some have argued against this.

what i can definitively tell you from my experience with the 650 is that the AMP is not for me. i see no smearing on this set with it off and putting it on only makes the picture look unnatural. others feel the oposite so as with many things i think only you can tell.

as to whether the 650 at 120hz with AMP off is better than the 550 at 60hz with no AMP, i can not say. however i am wondering myself.

as a side, these are all the differences between the 550 and 65 according to amazon (of these and in addition to AMP, i would think the 4ms and 50k contrast might be of interest as well):

Series 6 Step Up Features

* 50,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio

* AutoMotion Plus 120Hz image interpolation for smoother motion

* 4ms response time

* Transparent and Opaque Color (TOC) bezel

* Ethernet port with Infolink free RSS feeds

* 4 HDMI 1.3 ports

* Sports and Game modes

* Compatible with Samsung's Home Digital Media Adapter for playback and navigation of Internet and stored PC multimedia

I believe AMP is the 120hz software.

Isn't the feed at 60hz and so the TV would have to interpolate an entire frame-per-second?
My panel is 5ms so I don't need to spend the extra money for 120Hz. Others who are more concerned about perfection can spend the money.
I'd assume that there is an unnoticeable difference between 5ms and 4ms, right? And 120 hz doesn't really do much for gaming anyways right?
Also I realize there's no price talk allowed but could someone point me in the right direction of where the best deal for this TV is? I know it's cheap on amazon.com but I heard they now have to charge tax if you live in NY. PM or something.

Correct on both of those.
From my understanding, there's no better 120Hz processing than MotionFlow, don't let anybody tell you otherwise. I mean, it's been confirmed that this process is far more natural-looking and smoother than anybody else, period. I mean, yeah, Samsung's AMP is nice, too, but it looks more like fast-fowarded video to even be used all the time. Check out a Sony W/Z4100 then check out a Samsung ToC LCD, then tell me which processing you like better.

What?! Response time has almost nothing to do with 120Hz. The only bearing response time has on 120Hz is if the panel is actually capable of it. 120Hz refresh rate requires a response time of 8.333ms or lower (which most tvs made today have AFAIK). You can say your vizio has a 5ms panel, but that won't keep you from seeing judder due to 2:3 pulldown. Everything else aside 8ms w/ 120Hz > 5ms w/ 60Hz.
what's the best wall mount to get for this tv on amazon.com? i don't wanna drop over a thousand dollars and then have this thing fall off my wall
Check out Monoprice.com . They actually sell high quality mounts at the price they should be sold for - not hyped for the HDTV marketplace.

I use one of their flush mounts for my 52" and I use one of their articulating mounts for my 42".
