I have a friend who wants to get the Panasonic 103" plasma TV, but his room is only 16' deep. If you figure the plasma itself will take up no more than 12" of depth and 1.6 times the 90" screen width equals 12 feet, then you have 13 feet plus an aditional 3 feet for his couch. Eyeballs will be, or could be, greater than 1.6 times screen width from the screen. Is that OK? For a front projection screen, 1.6 times screen width is excellent. Does it work the same for a large plasma TV?

Since your friend is getting a 103 in Plasma, he/she is very serious about their HDTV. As it turns out your friend is all most bang on the the current recommendations outlined by THX.

THX recommends a 40 degree view angle as optimum, and the minimum view angle of 28 degrees. With a 103 inch HDTV, the minimum viewing distance would be 10.3 feet and furtherest would be 15.3 feet. If the HDTV is I foot deep, then the room is perfect for that size TV. Have a look at the THX recommendations .

There are other opinions on the subject HDTV Size / View Distance; check out this web-page for an updated information on the subject.

Sixteen feet should be fine, but I would tell him to save his money and get a nice pj. $50,000 will buy allot of pj... And a few bunnies thrown in I am sure.

In my mind, the proper question should not be about the viewing distance, but rather the listening distance. Panasonics these days usually don't buzz too much, and the fans are for the most part whisper quiet, but at least the one 103 inch model that I checked out did have a quite noticeable buzz. I don't care how nice the giant pic is, but if it buzzes too loud, the $40k experience is spoiled. I suppose if he can afford to drop that kind of dough on the plasma, he can probably afford to come up with a sound-deadening solution to minimize the buzz. To each his own. I trust he has the money to upgrade the wiring in his home to support the amps that this thing will draw, and I trust he has 220 wired into his living room/theater.

Perhaps the one I checked out was an anomaly and the rest are quiet. Perhaps he has poor hearing.

But he should definitely be forewarned ahead of time that in a small room with little clearance behind it, that PDP may be a bit on the noisy side.
