Is 5000:1 CR Adequate

707 Views 2 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Darren_C
Like everyone else I am greatly interested to see more information on Panasonic's 2008 line of plasmas. I was planning to purchase a 50PZ700U as soon as prices come down a little more, which I never anticipated would enter my price range. But the new line has given me some pause. It might make sense to wait if I can get better value with the new line. The new screen size as well as improvement in CR appears to be their main selling point. But if the tv will be in my bedroom and viewed mainly at night will the 20 or 30,000:1 CR even matter? Is the 700Us current CR adquate?

Plasma will be much brighter in your home than at the store. When I have my 50" plasma on at night (in the lowest contrast mode), it produces enough light to light up the entire room like a lamp is turned on. If I put it on in vivid at night it would be like having flood lights on. There is a big difference between having a plasma on in a 100,000 square foot store with giant flood lights, and watching a plasma at home with 1 or 2 100 watt lights in the room.
It won't matter because the manufacturer claims are all bogus.

If you need numbers, try using those from a publication that has reviewed the same models.

Even measurements from a third party aren't always realistic. If you don't think you can adjust them well enough in the store to trust your eyes, make sure to get a good return policy just in case.

Unless your bedroom has tons of sunlight and you mostly watch during the day, I suspect almost any plasma will be bright enough; probably brighter than most CRT direct views. As for contrast and black levels, you should definitely see for yourself.
