I just rented Invincible, and on the box it says 1080p and then in extras it says 1080i and 480p. My TV is native 720p(1366x768), but I don't know if 720p will work or should i set my player to 1080i? my blu ray player is a sony playstation 3, and I have the latest firmware, so it can do 720p on blu-ray.

for 1366x768 displays

using 1080i (or p if it supports 1080p input) the player sends a 1920x1080 signal which is downscaled by the tv to 1366x768

using 720p the player downscales from 1920x1080 to 1280x720 then the tv upscales that to 1366x768

in other words use the maximum your tv accepts
my TV accepts 1080i. so i should set it to that? the reason im wondering, is because i don't know if the disc supports 720p. so would it upscale 480p?
The PS3 allows you to set all the resolutions your TV supports. Have you already set the PS3 to 1080i and/or 720p for games? If so, it should work the same on movies and you shouldn't have to do anything further.
ps3 does not upscale any content on blurays

and regardless of the disc any bluray player should be able to downscale any 1080p/i content to 720p (even SD resolution if the player has SD outputs)
yes, its set to 720p/1080i.
Some 1366x768 TVs can accept 1080p and downscale to 768p. My Pioneer plasma does this well for movies because it can receive 1080p/24 from the PS3; however for games etc it can only do 1080i because it can't accept 1080p/60.

Best approach: Try all possible options, and use the one that works/looks the best.
Agree with Ken. And I'd be wary of 1080i because it's very possible the deinterlacer in the TV will do more damage to the image than the downscale-upscale process of sending it 720p.

That's just weird that it accepts 1080p24, but not 1080p60.

Well, 1080p60 is a lot more bandwidth than 1080p24.
Many of the 768p LCD TVs I have seen take only one 540p frame from the 1080i feed and scale it to 768p. So you won't see more than 540p of quality.

However, a few 768p sets out there do accept 1080p and will scale to 768p. Hard to tell which ones though.

As the others have mentioned, you gotta try them both and let your eyes make the decision.
