Is an Onkyo TX-DS787 my best option?

Hi, I am going to upgrade my receiver. I currently have an old Technics receiver from 1995. It has 4 channels. Front Left, Front Right, Center, and Rear (rear being 1 channel). Anyways, I want a 5.1, 6.1, or 7.1 receiver. I am able to buy a used Onkyo TX-DS787 from a family member. It is in great condition, and nothing is wrong with it. We have not settled on a price but I think it will be around $200-$250. My question is, is this my best option in my budget price range? I can't go over $300 due to my WAF (actually $300 would be pushing it). Is there something better for me in this price range? I do not need HDMI as my 57" Rear projection HDTV only has component ins and outs. I will use it mainly for movies and a little bit of music. It is a small living room that this will be in. I currently have a pair of Cerwin Vega RE-25's, a JBL N1 CC speaker, and rear Paradigm Titans. Here are some specs of the Onkyo. Let me know your thoughts and thanks in advance!

Is there something better that I can get for around $200-$250 or should I get tha Onkyo TX-DS787?

Thanks!
Even though it is an older model I do not think you can do much better for the amount you want to spend. Onkyo makes very good receivers.

Here is a few I can think of:

SR504 is 7.1 receiver compared to 6.1 on tx-ds787

SR504 supports decoding of more Dolby and DTS formats (

DTS, DTS-ES Discrete/Matrix 6.1, DTS Neo:6, DTS 96/24, Dolby Digital, Dolby Pro Logic II , Dolby ProLogic IIx , Dolby Digital EX)

I think DACs (digital to analog converter) are also better (192 kHz/24-Bit)

It has more input/output connections.

Also since this will be new, you will be covered under warranty, if anything goes wrong.

Very good points! Thanks for the info. Now I need to think harder on what to do... I was pretty set on the 787 but the points you brought up with the Onkyo TX-SR504 makes me wonder if the SR504 is a better option for me.....
The 787 is older but more likely more powerful than the 504. It's 36lbs and probably has a more robust power supply. The 504 weighs just under 21 lbs.

So your tradeoff would be the newer features of the 504 vs the THX Certification and more powerful 787. But since the 787 doesn't even have Dolby Pro Logic II, I'd go for the 504.

You might be able to find the refurbished 603X in your price range too. It's got a little more power some added features over the 504.
