Is anyone else surprise that we're not seeing more HD-DVD sales?

there aren't more HD DVD sales. I was kind of hoping that there would be more BOGOs or 3-for-2 deals after Warner's announcement. I know it's after Christmas and all, and pricing sales aren't as prevalent, but it seems they'd be doing more considering how much HD DVD software sales fell the week after Warner's announcement.

Amazon has run consecutive HD DVD sales since the announcment. Check over there.

Not sure what you're basing this off of. Amazon has had a couple of sales since the Warner announcement for both HD DVD and Blu-Ray. HighDefDigest even had an article about the sale. In fact, there's one for 50% off Drama titles right now. I added a bunch of titles to my collection recently thanks to Amazon.

There's also a re-vamped thread on sales and deals in this forum. The first page is being updated with current deals so you might want to check in there, too.

I'm not saying there aren't any sales. I check the HD DVD sales thread daily. But Amazon's sale doesn't have that great a selection. I'm talking something along the lines of Best Buy's 3-for-2 sale that included EVERY HD DVD that was $34.99 or less.

But considering that HD DVD sales plummeted after Warner's announcement, I was hoping for some REALLY good sales. Amazon's HD DVD sales paled in comparison to its Blu-ray sale.
The #1 reason that HD DVD sales have paled in comparison is because there hasn't been any compelling new releases by Universal or Paramount pretty much the whole month of January while BD titles such as 3:10 to Yuma and Sunshine have been very popular. Hard to get sales if you don't put out something new for people to buy.
When I said the "sales paled in comparison," I was talking about sales as in price reductions and incentives, not units sold.
mhtom, i see what you were trying to say now. I agree with you that the sales aren't as big, but like you said it's post-Christmas.

Yes, they've run them, but BD's had about 9 pages of films to HD-DVD's 3 pages. BDs has had 3x the titles and the HD-DVD selection has been mediocre at best.

Exactly. With everyone saying one format will cause prices increases, BD still is having more deals than HD DVD even though BD is dominating sales. Maybe HD DVD doesn't want to look like its panicking, but I don't think discounting the players will be enough. I have both formats and will continue to buy HD DVDs, just not at $24-$27.
some new titles would be great , looks like a drought again for the time being ..

be nice to know what coming soon ........

the blu-ray list goes on an on for January...Resident Evils, War, Shoot 'em up, The Rock, Man on Fire, Con Air, etc....

I'm not saying those are all good movies, but HD DVD has given us, what? The Pianist and Zodiac. Both good movies, but catalog and nowhere near mass appeal.

The lack of sales isn't surprising, but it's frustrating.

This whole thing with Warner and HD DVDs reaction is so weird. It's like Warner shot HD DVD in the side...and HD DVD says it's going to be fine (recent announcements), but he keeps bleeding to death and refuses to be taken to the hospital.

With everyone saying, "The war is over." Is it any wonder that sales are down? Also, 1st Q is usually a slow time any way. And though I have both formats, I have even slowed down on my purchases.
I'm not surprised that there aren't any "firesales" as I expect the OP was suggesting. They don't want to incite panic that the end is in fact here and lose the rest of their studio support. I'll be waiting for the Jack Ryan Collection to come out and keep my eyes open for titles that I want in the mean time.

IMO, the only way HD-DVD even attempts to really get back into this is to go for $20 new releases like the DVD's are set at. On the other hand I'm not totally sure how a price point is established, but I'd think the studios have a hand in how much a new release would cost. Would the studios go for something like that? To me there doesn't seem like too much incentive for the HD-DVD studios to cut their own throats in order to sale more HD-DVD's at a lower profit point...they'll just switch over.

My fear is that we will see more combo titles to give the end-user more confidence that there's a "fall back" plan of sorts. I'm not a big fan of combo's like many on here, mainly because you can't touch either side of the disk and god forbid you blemish the HD-DVD side.

Without inciting any rude responses, if you are looking for good deals on HD DVD software then Ebay is the place to go. There are more then a few people dumping quite a bit on their.
It's also January, a slow month for sales in pretty much everything.

+1

I don't get the dumpers myself. They're reacting as if come June all their HD DVD's will no longer work.

OP should just keep an eye on the deal threads. Offers cycle pretty quickly, so you have to be ready to buy. Just don't lose any sleep over missing out because you'll get another shot sooner than you might expect.
I'm not gonna lie, people are broke after christmas....

$20 retail would not do it. I won't say it wouldn't do anything, but it wouldn't draw any new people into the format.

$20 movies, $150 players....none of this does a thing to put a dent in the growing public perception that blu-ray is the winning format. Sad but true.

What reason do people who haven't bought into either format at this point have to opt for HD DVD?

If they haven't bit yet, odds are they're happy with DVD, and would only be "excited" by what's coming out in the future, not particularly caring about who has the best catalog titles they already own on DVD.

Blu-ray continues to impress. HD DVD has next to nothing. Beowulf should sell half decent. I don't know if Bee movie tanked in the theater, I certainly had no interest in it.

But for every 1 HD DVD exclusive that comes out, blu-ray will give you a dozen.

I love and own both formats, but HD DVD doesn't have a plan or a clue. They had opportunities to make bold moves before Warner defected, but chose not to do so. Who knows what they're doing now.
