I recently bought the Apex AD-800

progressive scan DVD player which is being sold

at Sams Club for only $199.

It makes a decent picture except that

I'm experiencing severe tearing in the image when

using it with my G10.

I'm told that tearing is normally caused

by the projector itself and not by a DVD player. But I

don't see tearing when using either my HTPC

or my Dish 6000. Is anyone else experiencing this

with the AD-800?

The AD-600 is the only one that I have seen or seen reviewed.


It has a poor picture for a DVD player as confirmed by www.hometheaterhifi.com

But I've gotten more good stuff for next to nothing

than anyone would ever believe.

The thing is that it rarely happens when buying at retail.

That's why I usually only buy retail from Wal-Mart or

Sams. They're one of the few places left where they

smile and say thank you when you go to get your

Robert, is this the player with the VGA outputs and component outputs? Apex had two progressive versions, one with VGA outputs and one without. I believe the VGA ones are hard to find these days. Maybe just as well.


By the way, earlier Apex dvd players had a cult following due to the "secret" menu that allowed region hacking and macrovision defeat. Also, they seem to play MP3/CDR as well.

Thanks for the link.


From what little I've up picked up in threads on

the DVD hardware forum it was the Apex 800A that

had the VGA output. I bought the newer AD-800 which

does not. Actually VGA output is a prerequisite

for me when I buy a DVD player for the long run since I also use CRT projectors which don't have component inputs.

I'm on the list to buy the much heralded Skyworth 1050P

and hopefully that will be the one I'll want to keep.

I just bought the Apex to see what a progressive scan

DVD player is all about (never had seen one perform) and

knew I would probably be returning it.

The Faroudja based FLi2200 de-interlacer should make the Skyworth a breakthough product. At least I hope it will be because buying an item directly from Hong Kong is something I've never done before. And of course they won't be

smiling and saying thank you should I want to return

it, haha.
