I love using Audyssey DSX wide channels (or height channels to lesser extent) for movies and some games, but whenever there is a game where characters are talking the wide channels totally fail at localizing a character who is talking. For example if a character is talking in an FPS and you spin around, the voice should sound like it is spinning around you rather naturally, but with the wide channels on the pannig sounds very un-natural.

is the upmixing better for the atmos channels? Do voices still sound natural?

Audyssey DSX generates Wides & Heights by copying the Front L/R channels and adding reverb to simulate early reflections. These reverbed copies can sound unnatural for some material. Dolby Surround upmixing extracts diffuse information to feed the height speakers, so voices typically won't be steered overhead. No one has heard Dolby upmixing to Wides, so it is not possible to answer that part of your question.
