Is DCDi the best in the budget (Oppo and Helios) pricerange ???

Looking at a budget upcaling DVD player that has both component and HDMI. It also be able to upscale over component to 1080i/p (reason being i will upgrade my TV at a later stage so just component now)

I always thought DCDi was the best you can get in this pricerange or are there other players with better picture quality.

I am willing to spend between 200 and 300 USD but am only able to find players that do all i want over HDMI

Can anyone recommend a player that has DCDi, 1080ì / p and able to upscale on both component and HDMI

with or without hack

Forget the Helios. It's a POS, use Amlogic chip (not DCDi).

Forget the Oppo 971/981 as it has DCDi but no component upconversion.

Oppo 970 has component upconversion using hacked firmware or firmware patch, but has Mediatek (not DCDi). It's very good on most except for anime and video-source movies like TV shows, concerts, cartoons (Disney blockbuster animations are generally film-source so should be OK). DCDi is king on video-source due to good deinterlacing.

Zenith DVB-318 has DCDi (FLI-2301) and can do component and DVI/HDMI (needs DVI->HDMI cable, it's best is component 1080i as DVI has sync. issues with many TVs as well as white crush) using older firmware (newest firmware disables component upconversion). It's extinct so hard to find.

LG DVB-418 has DCDI (FLI-2310) and can do the same as Zenith, has HDMI built-in (no conversion cable needed), and can be hacked to do component 1080i (using LG 531 firmware). It's avail. on Epay refurbed for $80 shipped (or less).

Momitsu v880/888(n) can do component, DVI, and VGA using Sigma 8500 chipset. Build quality is suspect but better than Helios. It can be a little more expensive due to overseas shipping.

Bravo D1/D2 are like Momitsu except even harder to find.

Samsung HD931/941 uses DCDi, hackable via remote codes to do component 720p/1080i, but also harder to find.

Samsung HD841/850/950 can do component upconversion but uses Zoran chipset using the same remote codes as Samsung HD931/941. Zoran is mediocre on upconversion (worst than Mediatek which is very slightly worse than DCDi).

Don't forget DCDi has "macroblocking" problem with some TVs/PJs (DLP, plasmas, some CRTs) on dark scenes on some tittles--most people don't see it.

Best upconversion these days (no macroblocking) is the Reon Vx by Silicon Optix such as those found in the more expensive Denon SD-DVD, HD-DVD Tosh HD-XA2, Blue Ray Samsung BD-1200. They don't upconvert SD-DVDs on component (the HD players can upconvert HD tittles on component).

Awesome reply couldn't ask for more

Thanks a lot
I have a GS LDA511 that does 1080i over component using DCDi nicely. There is a hack to disable DHCP/Macrovision but even without the hack it upscales non-copyprotected DVDs.

I tried the Helios H4000. It was a disaster and went back immediately.

I'm looking for a upscaling over component player that does pillar boxing (the LDA511 doesn't) and also does a good job upscaling home-made interlaced DVDs made from Hi8 and miniDV camcorder source.

From the brochure I understand that the LG DN798 will upscale non-copy protected DVDs over component. I'm hoping the Zoran 888 does better with interlaced video than the Zoran 7 did. Do any of the other easily available upsampling players such as the Phillips DVP5982/37, Toshiba SD-5000, Samsung DVD-1080P7, Panasonic DVD-S53K or Sony DVP-NS75H upsample non-copy protected DVDs over component? How does the upscaling compare to DCDi processing for interlaced video?

I don't believe anybody even named a DCDi player that can do 1080p over component in response to your question. Is that what you want?

Chris
Does all DCDi player suffer macroblocking issue?

No, the chips I am aware of are the Faroudja FLI23xx series. As far as I know the earlier DCDi chips don't have the issue.

No just looking for a fututure proof player to do 1080i over component now and 1080p over HDMI for later when i can afford a 1080p LCD
Then thats rather unfortunate. I know of no players which have both component upconversion, and 1080p support. I would probably purchase an 970HD, just for the component upconversion, buy it refurbished, for $119. They seem to retain their value rather well, as used 970HDs sell on ebay for around $115.
Helios does do 1080p via component but 1) it is a POS, 2) it offers NO improvement in PQ over 1080i. Analog is limited bandwidth wise so going 1080p only softens your image.
