IE. if you use a 9" CRT, will a scaler add anything to the image, or does any scaling introduce artifacts?

Currently - Zenith 7" CRT, 80x60 1.3 gain screen


Soon to be - 107x60 1.3 gain...with whatever higher rez DLP gets its act together (finally)with Panamorph or B stock/etc 9" CRT

You often read about manufacturers at recent trade shows using high-end graphics displays, such as the Sony G90, in combination with something like the Faroudja 5000, which can convert 1080i to 1080p. Comments are invariably that the result is spectacular. Have my doubts, though, at running a high-resolution HDTV video signal through anything but the very highest-quality scalers. -- John

The Faroudja is about the only video processor (to 1080p) I'd try with HDTV. Maybe one of the Snell & Wilcox Interpolators. Still, I'd do an A/B comparison before taking a decision. Your display would have to be impeccable for this to work.
