What I mean by "enhancements" are just those features that are in the HD-A1's set-up menu that allow you to supposedly improve the audio/video. For example, the HD-A1 has "black level enhancement," for video and "dynamic range adjustment," "dialogue enhancement" for sound - plus whatever I can't think of now.

Anyway, I've had them ALL turned on since I bought my player. So my question is if this is generallly good and or a legit improvement to the features in question? Would there be a reason to turn them off and why?

So far, I'm happy with the sound/video output at the current settings but then again I've never tested or examined the differences -- somebody let me know what they think...

I left the enhanced black level on, but kept the dynamic range and dialog enhancement off. I always turn off anything on any component that alters the sound. Never have been a DSP kind of guy. Give me plain, un-fooled around with DD+, DD, or DTS and I'm happy. I will use PLIIx for watching regular TV, but that's it.

The "sound enhancements" are for late night viewing when everyone else is sleeping and you have to keep the sound down lower than normal. One feature raises the sound level for background and the other raises the dialog level. For normal viewing, both should be off.
