I currently have a 5.1 setup of PSB Image speakers. I have a C5 for the center channel, B5's for the front left and right, and B4's for surrounds. I just moved and have more space, so I'd like to upgrade my B5's to towers so I can get a little more power and low end out of them.

Seeing as PSB discontinued the Image T6's (which is what I likely would have gotten) as well as the T5's and haven't introduced replacement towers in the Image series, I'm kind of SOL right now. The only option I have is to look up to their Imagine series, which just introduced the similarly priced X2T and X1T towers. The only thing that worries me is that the Imagine series' different sound signature could clash with my current setup, and I don't intend to replace any of my other speakers as of yet.

So what do you guys think? Have any of you tried combining different series' of speakers before?

The front three speakers are the most important speakers to have matched from the same speaker line. The surrounds don't matter as much. You might be able to get away with adding the new towers to your set up without changing the center channel. Then again you might not get away with it. In the end getting the matching center channel to match the new towers shouldn't be to costly. I personally would get three new matching speakers in the front.

If you're considering buying from a place:
- with a no-hassle return policy, buy, try and return if it doesn't work out;
- with a less-liberal return policy, see if they'll let you bring your CC speaker in so that you can do a demo with the new mains. (It may not be a perfect test, but it'll give you a rough idea of how the speakers match up.)

With some EQ they just have to be close. I used to believe entirely in the whole "LCR must match dogma" until I had a center channel from an entirely different manufacturer and I could barely notice after an Audyssey EQ.

So I'm not so much a believer anymore.

FWIW: A few years ago, I had Paradigm Monitor 7v4s paired with a CC-370v3. I wasn't entirely happy with the combo, so I tried a couple of different CC speakers and one of them was an older Paradigm Studio CC/v2. Although it had a slightly different sound from the Monitor mains, it actually blended very well with them and provided a fuller overall sound than the 370 could deliver.

I have a center channel from the same product line as my main speakers but it doesn't match particularly well. I would say it is less important than people make it out to be.

I think PSB Image and Imagine series are close enough in character and should match more or less. Otherwise you could just buy the Imagine XC and sell your C5. You don't need to replace your B5s and B4s.

I personally have the T5s, C5 and B5s as my 5 speakers and they perform beautifully as all share the 5.25" woofer.

Based on price, the Imagine T2 seems very close to the older T6.

As others have pointed out, the most critical speakers match is the Front three (Left/Center/Right). Ideally, they should be brand and series matched. Though sometime Brand matched is enough.

Sub are not at all critical for tonal matching, the Sub just needs to be good enough to do the Job. Ideally, Surrounds should be brand and series, or at least brand matched, but are less critical.

You can try new Left/Right Front speakers and see how they sound with your Center, but likely at some point you will want a Center that matches your Fronts.

As much as I love an excuse to get new speakers, I see no reason to replace my center channel right now. I just got it a few years ago, it works fantastically, and it should last me quite a bit longer before I replace it. Spending a bunch more money for a center channel only slightly better than the C5 just seems superfluous. It makes much more sense to get two towers that match well with the center.

Have you ever listened to any Imagine series speakers before? Did they sound similar to your Images?

I don't know if you meant the Imagine X2T's are close in price to the T6's, because the T2's are a lot more expensive and way out of my price range! If I did go for the Imagine line, it'd probably be the X2T's or X1T's that I went for.

If those PSB T5 speakers in your first link were in Black Ash, I would've already jumped on them and had no need to create this post. Alas, they're in Dark Cherry and would clash with the rest of my system. All other T5's and T6's in that color are sold out from what I can find (although if someone knows of where they're not, I'm all ears!).

Right now the general consensus seems to be that I should get the towers and see how they sound with my center. They could work perfectly or they could clash horrendously, but it's hard to tell for sure unless someone has heard the Image and Imagine line played together. I may just grab some towers from a retailer with a good return policy and give them a test run in my system.

Any other opinions or things I should be aware of?
