Here's a question for anyone who is interested.

Sound being most and foremost the first priority, what else makes you like a set of speakers.

I for one, never have a grill cover on mine, cause I love the mechanical nature of a driver and enjoy just watching it go through it's motions. kinda voyeuristic eh! lol

Larger driver (10" and above) just seem to add a presence and a greater visual appeal which I believe adds to the enjoyment of whats audibly coming out of the speaker.

I even took the crossovers out of my old speakers cause I considered them a work of art and had them sitting on top of the cabinets until I sold them.

I don't know...just a thought I've had for a while.

Flashy chrome covered plastic, plexi, and neon lights.

A nice veneer or piano paint always looks nice.

Large drivers always have a dominating presense that I like.

Metal coned mids have a certain appeal, a,la Seas Excel magnesium cones.

looking at them while hearing them takes away from the whole experience. speakers aren't supposed to sound like speakers. visual cues play a big part in "staging". music sounds better in the dark when you can't see the speakers.

So you're saying we should just leave our speakers bare MDF? (and I know you don't)

I agree that speakers shouldn't sound like speakers, but a speaker shouldn't be ugly either; it has to fit into our room...unless your room is perpetually dark and thus unable to see anything in it.

You mean that wouldn't be cool? @#$ I was just planning on posting the pics of the spinner hubcap I designed for the grill of my new diy project!

Oh... I guess I should answer the question seriously. I prefer simple and effective. I would like the speakers to be well finished and attractive in their own right, but, I also want them to be unobtrusive. I guess the point is that they shouldn't be an eyesore, but, they shouldn't be the focal point either.

they should look good, but not overly done. having them all blinged up just seems pointless to me. i've always had a "function over form" attitude towards audio. idk, they just shouldn't be distracting in anyway.

some of the ones posted above are seriously a work of art, but why?

I think speakers should have a look. I like the look of a lot of high end speakers, but there is also a piece of me that likes a menacing look too. Look at mktheater's setup or some of the others here and you know what I mean. I have the driver of my subwoofer pointed away from when people walk in so they don't see it. They just think its a small table and then when something hits and the couch vibrates and they look to see what hit them they are amazed if they have never experienced anything like that.

Take a look at the rbh speakers with the metal drivers. One of those with dual subwoofers above and below in a stack just looks like it could kick you in the chest.

Professional speakers don't have to look good just like race cars such as Formula 1 don't have to look good. But they end up looking cool anyway.

Home speakers must look good just like luxury cars must look good. Styling is more important than performance for most cars and for most speakers as well.

An Epic product needs both though.

I like huge speakers with multiple drivers better than a simple 2 way system. That is the problem I have right now, my 6.5" bookshelves sound fine to me, but they sure are boring in the looks department. I would rather have something more like the magna cum laude's in parts express's diy section.

The research has proven that looks matter. Also, in sited testing listeners have a preference for the "brand-name". The Porsche or Ferrari wins the sited test simply because is says "Porsche" on the emblem.

Mike

there are as many different opinions of the aesthetic as there are people on the planet.

therefore, the answer is anything, everything, and/or nothing.

truth is so dissatisfying.

i think 2-way bookshelves are money.

(not technically bookshelves)

sometimes beauty can be appreciation for a design that meets its objectives.

but, like i said before, i am just one opinion in a world of 6 billion, all with equal weight. so, my opinion doesn't carry much weight! haha...but neither does yours. ;-)
