I know 4x3 screens are measured diagonally, but are 16x9?

I think that should read:


"All self contained television screens are measured diagonally unless otherwise specified".


Screens for other purposes such as FPTV, Film, Slides, etc are usually measured in a H x W configuration.

You can certainly think that's how FP screens are sold, but having gone through a round of purchasing one I can tell you that diagonal measurements are what is used.


I spec'd my maximum width, and was told "For a 4:3 aspect ratio, that's an 84" diagonal".

At least in most HT mags and on this forum ,front projection screens are given a width dimension then often the aspect ratio after that. The example is 107" wide at 16x9. Most on this forum don't use the diagonal measurement at all.
