I have a new 40K on order with Ecost and when I ordered it it showed it would ship in 2 to 5 days. When I called to check on a possible ship date they told me they have no idea when it might ship. Is JVC still making these? I was just wondering if I would be better off cancelling it or trying a refurb or go to Vanns and get a 5U. I sure like the looks of the 40K better than the new 5U's. I know a few other places have the 40K's in stock but not at the price e-cost has.

Thanks.

I don't believe the 40K is being manufactured any longer but there may still be a bunch available in the supply chain that may get to eCost. I recently bought a refurb 40K from eCost and have been really happy with it.

Thanks Chris. I've never had good luck with refurbs in the past so I was a little leary of getting the 40K refurb. It seems like allot of people here have bought the refurbs with good results. If I don't see any movement in the next day or so maybe I'll try one. The person I talked to at Ecost was no help at all.

Thanks

What makes you think the 40K isn't still being manufactured? I'm still seeing it on JVCs site and it's also posted on a lot of retailers websites.

I believe production of the 40K stopped several months ago and the HM-DH5U and HM-DT100 started. It is also likely that production for those 2 models will have ceased before year end and no more D-VHS models produced. Just my prediction, I have no inside information.

I purchased a new 40K from eCost in May and a refurb 40K that I received just last week. The refurb arrived in truly 'like new' condition and works perfectly. However, my May 2004 new unit has been back to JVC service center twice for problems (I just got it back from JVC this week and it appears the problems have now been corrected). My experience with the 40K refurb is very positive. Also this unit does come with a JVC 90 warranty so use the unit when you get it to see if any problems show up and if they do you can send it to JVC for service.

Thanks for your thoughts Ron. I was just sitting here looking at the 40K refurbs at Ecost. I tried calling again today about my new order and really didn't learn anything. I just wanted a basic idea if they thought a week or 2 weeks or anything. Felt like I had bothered them in asking. Kinda irks you to give your money to a company that can't at least be half way nice on the phone. I wonder now how hard it is to cancel an order there.....

Thanks again for your experience.

Send an email and cancel your order, you should get confirmation of the cancellation via email. I have made many purchases from eCost and have never called them. The one order that I made when the item wasn't in stock didn't ship quickly enough to suit me so I canceled by email. I believe the order confirmation contains a link to send the cancellation. In my opinion these very small profit margin, high volume discount online sellers can't offer the kind of service you seem to expect. If you want friendly conversation and great customer service, the local stores are the best. Some full service online sellers are also very good in that regard but eCost and others don't pretend to offer anything but low prices. Their markup just doesn't have room to provide personnel to be available for anything but the briefest customer service calls. The employees are busy filling orders and checking inventory and buying in volume at the lowest possible prices. Although I have never worked for a company like that, I expect the employees are all very busy and really aren't rude or mean.

I found the link on cancelling the order. Thanks for the info.

I don't expect when calling a place like Ecost to make a new best bud over the phone. I don't expect allot out of them but I don't appreciate rudeness as a response to a simple question. A simple we have no expected delivery date for these at this time would have been just fine.

Maybe I do expect to much :D

Thanks,

Got the order cancelled. Thanks for the info Chris. Just ordered a 40K refurb and we'll see how it goes. It would be great to have it by tomorrow but I kinda doubt it. Probably depends which warehouse it ships out of.

With the 30K and 40K, I really believe your chances are just as good with a refurb and the price is quite a bit better. Good luck.

My 40K refurb shipped from Ecost yesterday. Looks like it shipped out of Memphis and won't be delivered till next Thursday. Ordered 3 movies yesterday also so I should be all set for next weekend. Hopefully the 40K will arrive in excellent shape and UPS won't hammer it.

Got my 40K refurb delivered today (1 day early) and my three movies I ordered came in yesterday. Hopefully my Fuji S-VHS tapes will be here today or tomorrow.

Anyway the 40K looks to be in excellent shape. Ups didn't bang it up to bad. It was not double boxed and the unit itself was bubble wrapped with peanuts in the bottom of the box.

I won't be able to hook it up till the weekend but I'm excited to see U-571 in HD. Hopefully everything will work ok. I'll post my results after this weekend.

Thanks to all for the advice.

Here is my update. I posted this in the 30K & 40K refurb thread also.

I received my 40K refurb last Wed. from E-Cost. I hooked it up yesterday and it has the 40K whine when playing back a tape. I can hear it even with the doors to my cabinet shut. Last night while watching Behind Enemy Lines on D-VHS about halfway throug the movie just stopped and the tape ejected. I put the tape back in and it played the rest of the way through.

After setting up the firewire connection from my Motorola 6200 to the 40K I recorded part of a movie off HBO-HD. While watching some of it it did the same thing and ejected itself.

Any suggestion as to why this might happen?

I read through some of E-Costs return policies but I'm not really sure if I can return this for a refund or not. If I try another D-VHS machine I would probably go for a new 5U from Vann's. That is if i can get a refund on this one.
