Is my A1 toast?

951 Views 21 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  wormraper
I was trying to update the firmware via the net in my A1 last night. It seemed to be working when I went to bed. This morning, everything was shut off. I turned the player on and it said "loading" and then "no disc", which there was obviously no disc in the player. But, the Toshiba logo didn't show up on the screen.

I tried putting a DVD in the player and it booted right up and the timecode showed it playing, but again, no picture shows up on the TV and no audio comes through the receiver.

I can't get any sound or picture. Is the player toast? It's really frustrating since I just bought it in November. Why does Toshiba make their hardware so effing difficult to upgrade? Is it really that much trouble to let me download the upgrade to a ISB device and plug it in?

I'm really po'ed right now and would love any advice on how I can get my player to work again, if that is at all possible.

how do you have it hooked up??? if you have it hooked up through HDMI then it might have been switched back to component settings in the menu. hook it up through component and see if the picture comes back. That's happened to a few people around here before.
Yes, I'm connected via hdmi. I'll have to grab a set of component cables and see if that works. Thanks for the advice!

It's normal to have to use the remote to change video modes from analog out to HDMI out following an update.
I've never had to do this and I've loaded every firmware update including 2.2.

In that case, I guess it's just a function of the "initialize" command.

Have you tried rebooting and reinitializing the player?
just change the setting on the remote. why do people trash toshiba(insert any company here) when they are too lazy to either search here or RTFM.

That seems a little harsh. The OP did not trash Toshiba. His post is labeled "Is my A1 toast?" with a question mark. Had the title read "My A1 is a piece of junk" than I would agree with you.

Yeah you're right I just read it wrong

And for the record Toshia IS starting to have the ISO files downloadable...and all the ISO files are downloadable here....hence my harshness.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. It was just a simple mistake on my part. It changed the video out to Component and as soon as I switched it back, everything was working again.

Unfortunately, the firmware didn't update. I'm still on 1.4. I tried to do another firmware update and now it won't auto detect the IP, etc. I'm connecting the cable modem directly to the player, no firewall or anything like that, but no dice. I did download the ISO file for 2.2 but haven't had luck with that either. I burned a CD as a disc image using Nero burning rom and the player said something like "disc is not a DVD" so I burned a DVD-r as a disc image and it said "no disc". I'm apparently really stupid when it comes to updating this player.

I love my A1, don't get me wrong. It's an excellent player, both for HD DVDs and as an uprezzing SD DVD player. It blows my PS3 out of the water in every way, except for user friendliness. When I updated my PS3, I just downloaded the update onto an iRiver, plugged it into the player, clicked update and was done within 5 minutes. To update the A1, I've wasted 5 or 6 cd-rs, a dvd-r, bought an ethernet cable to connect the modem directly to the player, and have spent several hours trying to get one of the options to work, and I still can't get it figured out. I'm not a dumb guy, but the A1 sure makes me feel like I am.

Download the ISO from the toshiba canada site and read the ISO sticky thread as to how to burn ISO disks...takes about 2 minutes to burn and 15 minutes to update. If you can't do that I will send you my 1.5 disk.

Thanks for the advice. I did all of that (twice) after reading your post, but keep getting the "no disc" message on my player. Maybe it's because I'm using cheap memorex media. I'll buy some higher quality stuff tonight and see if that works.

are you burning at the slowest setting possible? Mac or PC?
The slowest the memorex media will allow me to burn is 8x, which is what I've been doing. I'll try to find some that will let me burn at 4x or slower.

I'm on a PC.

Are you sure you are burning it as an ISO image within your burning software?

I'm on a PC.

what program are you using??? to burn the ISO I recommend IMGBurn
*stop the presses*...A1 does not use the 1.5 update...you need the 2.2. Is that the one you are using? Sorry I was thinking 2nd gen. What version are you at now? did you say 1.4? (thats where I got 1.5 in my head.)

Maybe try going to 2.0 and THEN 2.2.
I've been using Nero this time, but I tried several others back when 2.0 (I think that was it) came out. I'll try IMGBurn out.

thundrSQ: Yeah, I've been trying 2.2, so no worries. I'll try it one more time with IMGBurn and if that doesn't work, I'll give 2.0 a try.

I downloaded imgburn and loaded it. When I click on the 2.2 iso, I get an error saying "Invalid or unsupported image file format". I'm going to check out the 2.2 ISO thread and see if I can find out why that's happening.
