Is new center and avr worth it?

1071 Views 19 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  Zorba922
Current set up
Samsung 75" RU8000
Pioneer VSX-823-K
Klipsch FR-82ii towers
Klipsch FC-62ii center
Wall mounted rear satellite speakers
Wall mounted Front satellite height speakers
SVS PB3000 sub

Currently the front height speakers are not wired as I bought the towers to replace them. Current avr only supports 5.1 and I’m looking to do 5.1.2. Sounds pretty good currently but of course I have the itch to upgrade. Budget wise is open but I’m always looking for the best bang for the buck. Current thoughts are Yamaha tsr 700 to add front height speakers and new center klipsch 450c to add 2 more center speakers for around 800 total. Any input on if this investment would be worth it? Also looking for ideas where to move avr to accommodate for larger center. This is only spot I can fit entertainment center in living room.

The center will be a slight upgrade , worth it if you sit offf axis . I’m also curious how you hide an avr if I ever try to use my larger tv I may need another tv stand sadly cable looks terrible on that Sony 4k so it’s collecting dust in a box .. using a tiny 40” 1080p tv..
It's a lot of cash for an already compromised setup. My suggestion is to loose the entertainment center altogether but without seeing the rest of the layout no clue where to hide a rack. Entertainment centers are bulky, set your TV too high up and went out of fashion years ago. The clean look is in fashion with AV components hidden out of sight.

Ditching the entertainment center has been on my mind that would free up a lot of room.
That's a compromised setup that probably won't be worth a centre speaker upgrade. If you want Atmos, I would just buy the AVR and not look back.
You already have fairly decent speakers, but they're a bit cramped due to your room layout.

Yeah the radiator under the window really kills my space for anything.
TVs may not even have been invented when your house was built... lol
That area is great for an old console radio though...

haha 1955 radiators were a great heating system, 2021 not so much but it still cranks so i keep it lol
Have you considered re-orienting everything at an angle so it's more of a corner setup? You'd likely gain a little distance between the L&R speakers, and from the picture it seems like that might work better for your seating (though it's hard to tell for sure).

Give this guy a like for shoehorning all that into that space! I was going to say get a second sub but............he'll get evicted. Do peoples necks hurt when looking up at a TV like that?

impressive yes 🙌!!!
Yeah I wouldn’t add any more speakers or upgrade center , placement has more effects on sound quality.

Main problem is that the right tower is being smothered in that corner, so you're only getting maybe 1/2 of its output.

Only solutions:
1. Do a full-on corner placement.

or,
2. Use bookshelf speakers on high stands so that you can angle them sharply and avoid that wall getting in the way...the Hsu CCB-8 would be a solid choice and actually may not even require a center speaker when using extreme toe-in.

I didn’t even see the tower haha a plant and a white box are infront of it . That’s a huge issue !!!
Gonna echo what others have said. You can only do so much with what you're given. I personally wouldn't invest more money into your audio set up. If it was me, I would put that cash into an OLED.

I used to have a full audio set up also. In my case the wife got tired of all the gear and wires laying around. Not to mention how long it would take to set things up when I wanted to tweak things. What I did was put all my gear in the attic (avr/six sets of surrounds/four subs/two Emotiva amps/etc). Got a Sonos arc/one SLs/two Sonos subs and never looked back. Wife is beyond the moon with the clean set up and IMHO it really doesn't sound that bad. Don't get me wrong, it can't touch my previous set up, but it's more than adequate for the happiness it brings my wife.

She then let me upgrade to an OLED (way worth the $$). And I now have my towers set up in another room with a new Project table and a whole new love for my vinyl.

I guess what I'm getting at is that the itch can be used for newer ideas that will recharge your love of audio in a different direction. Good luck! It never ends!😅

Theoretical "optimal" TV height is ridiculously blown out of proportion. Human beings are perfectly capable of glancing up or down a few degrees with their head and/or eye movement without the slightest hint of strain or discomfort. If someone is unable to look up or down a few inches, they have WAY bigger problems than how their TV is mounted. Regardless, no one sits bolt upright when watching TV/movies. If anything, typical low TV placement has most people looking down to see the TV while reclined back comfortably. Even the TV shown would probably have people gazing downward while relaxed comfortably against the back of the seating.

Updated pictures of living room .. real tight living room with kitchen right to the right of the tv and stair case right behind main listening position. Tv may look high on the stand but it’s actual at good height when on the couch. Guessing I’ll most likely just upgrade avr to atmos to take advantage of front height speakers I have installed

You know, your surrounds are at a pretty good heighe for Rear Heights. If you get a pair of bookshelf speakers ar ear-level, you could have a 5.1.4 setup...

As the previous poster pointed out, your rear surrounds are so high up they might as well be used as Atmos speakers too.

The whole point of Atmos is to create a convincing separation of overhead and ear-level sounds. If you do not have the space for ear level surrounds, it kind of defeats the purpose.
