O.k., I've been lurking on the forums for a while and have finally made my way over to the dvd forums.

After years of waiting, (and thanks to some gremlins on the forums), I pulled the trigger and rented a u-haul and picked up the Panasonic 60 inch LCD rear projector (60LCX63) at Costco.

I then spent the next four hours gutting my existing home theater system (a 32" cinema series Toshiba, non-progressive player, etc.)

At Costco, I also picked up a Toshiba SD-K740 Progressive DVD player for well under $100.

I've searched the forums and couldn't find much information on this player. I wanted progressive scan output to take advantage of the new display.

So, my question, which is really quite basic, is ... is progressive progressive progressive? In other words, am I going to notice a huge benefit in picture quality with this progressive vs. another one? This one is 10-bit whatever that means.

To be honest, I can't say that I notice that much of a difference in picture quality (size, definitely) than the old set up. I had both set up through component inputs.

I should note that I haven't calibrated this TV with AVIA yet, since I loaned my copy to a friend, so maybe it isn't a fair test, but the truth is, I can't really tell if I should be doing something else or not.

I was really expecting a huge difference in progressive and anamorphic. I guess I'm a bit disappointed.

So, thoughts? should I return the dvd player and get a different one? One person told me to just buy the cheapest progressive scan player I could get, since the differences are not that great.

My two requirements is that that the player has digital optical out (so it can go to my receiver) and play DVD+R (because I make slideshows on my computer and it saves on this format).

Next project, speaker wires and universal remote.

Thanks in advance,

Rich

Not familar with those models but in my limited tests the sub $150 progressive players many times do worse job than the good HDTV's converting that 480i signal. Granted I have only tested about 5 cheap progressive players but I think marketing has taken over and a lot are saying progressive scan but the players video play back isn't so hot.

You got some bad advise. There is a difference among DVD players. The deinterlacer is only one part of the circuit. There is much more that makes one DVD player better than another.

With properly-flagged/authored/encoded DVDs (e.g., most major releases), the deinterlacing isn't much of a factor. The Toshibas are fairly decent in other respects, though they all seem to have the CUE bug and some models have chroma delay. Their frequency response has usually tested flat.

Keep in mind that even when you send your new RPTV a progressive signal, it still has to scale that to its native res of 1280 x 720. Ideally, you want that scaling to happen in the digital domain with the original DVD source. For this reason, I would highly recommend getting a DVD player than can send your RPTV a 1280 x 720 digital signal to its HDMI input.

I see this all the time. People get a really nice expensive TV and then hookup a cheapy DVD player. I did the same thing myself once. When I had the cheap DVD player, I ran it in interlaced mode and let the Hitachi do the processing. Then, after I stepped up to a good DVD player (Denon), I let the DVD player do the processing. On your setup, it might be better if you run the Toshiba in interlaced mode, you'll just have to try it out.

Well, obviously, I want the best picture quality, but it seems that it would be worthwhile to wait for HD-DVD to come out or for the HDMI Dvd players to come out and then down in price.

That being said - I found my dvd player on the Toshiba web site - it is the entry level single disc progressive player. I would link to it, but I don't have enough posts quite yet.

what do you all think? Should I keep it or should I send it back and just use my non-progressive dvd player for the time being?
