Using a 60" samsung DLP with an Explorer 8300HDC which is running OK. Also attached-an Irecord.

The cable company sent me a new box (Explorer 8640 HDC ) yesterday after a discussion I had with them. Is the 8640 better? A little reading tells me not, but I want to make sure.

Thanks for any help. This is my first post.

The specs on the box are very good

Faster processer MHZ and Mpeg4 and potentially more storage options

Also Energy Star rated

The 8640 is Digi/Anny >the 8650 is Digi only and the 8652 is Moca

I also think they can do the TiVo upgrade if avail

The downside is it is new and with any new product can be buggy and that is probably what your seeing

I just got one of these (Tampa Bay, FL area).

The HDMI connection is still buggy. It will not hold a 1080i signal. Once you turn the tv/box off and back on, it drops back to 480i. You have to change it to an SD channel and then back to HD.

The apparent temp. fix is to use component cables.

I had to set my box to turn on to an SD channel instead of the last channel viewed.

As far as speed, I notice no difference from my previous box (Explorer ???, forgot which one).

I was told by the rep on the phone at time warner there will be a new box coming out in a couple of weeks. At that time I asked her to not send me anything and I'll call back in a couple weeks.

Is this 8640 time warners "new" box?

And is the-not holding a 1080i signal when switched on- something that can be fixed?

I would say with 84.385% certainty [about the same a the Sunami hitting Hawaii at 11:05am this afternoon] that the 8640 is the new box. unless it is from a different manufacturer

Ok, now the big question. Is it better then the 8300?

It has a much faster CPU. Performance (responsiveness) should be significantly improved.

Most boxes currently run the same software, so you aren't likely to notice any change in the functionality or UI.
