I saw that shutter glasses 3d from Nvidia requires 120hz monitors but it only had some DLPs listed on nvidia's website as compatible. If the ln52a650 is 120hz can it also do the 3d? Supposedly it needs to be able to take in a true 120hz signal and not a 60hz upscaled to 120. Is this possible?

No, not for 3D video and not via HDMI - the current 120Hz (or higher) 1080p LCD flat panel HDTVs will not accept a 3D input as either a dual 1080p/24 or a dual 1080p/60 (120Hz total) video steam. I have seen a few 22 inch and smaller computer LCD monitors that will accept a 120Hz input, but no larger screen LCD HDTVs. Also many CRT computer monitors with VGA (analog) inputs can accept a 120Hz input that are compatible with Nvidia's 3D system for playing video games or other computer based video graphics. Current 2D LCD HDTVs on the other hand simply accept a single video stream at 1080p/24, or 1080p/60 input and process this for display at a higher refresh rate. Future 3D LCD HDTV models will need to incorporate additional video processing to accept the video in any of the several allowed 3D video formats and will also need new LCD panels with less image latency in order to avoid crosstalk between the displayed right and left images. Both the Sony and Samsung 3D demos that used LCD flat panel HDTVs at CES (Jan. 2010) produced rather poor results. This was probably because they were using existing LCD panels from their 2D products, but it appears that a new generation of higher performance LCD panels designed for 3D are just not starting to be produced by Samsung that will be going into their (and Sony's) new 2010 3D models.
