is the Wadia iTransport (basically) obsolete?

With these new AVR's that have iPhone/iPod capable USB ports, are they doing the same thing? Taking the digital signal right from the device and bypassing all the devices processing?

Just wondering if technology just moved THAT fast or if the "feature" of these AVR's was some type of marketing gimmick. Doesnt USB = digital?

um! Good question! Seems like the hype is over for the Wadia itransport. AppleTV is a cheaper alternative.

It is cheaper but it doesn't sound better.
Matched with good DAC, Wadia is still a better alternative IMO.

Yes it does.

One of the high end audio stores I call on did a demo for me using some music he recorded live then downloaded to his ITouch. He had the Itouch in a Wadia dock and then sent it through a Naim DAC. The sound quality was amazing, it was the most life like recorded performance I have ever heard.
Sorry to drag out an old thread, but I am interested in the answer to the original question - are the new receivers receiving analog or digital from the iPod?

As to this:

All you have done is prove that the Wadia to the Naim sounded good - you have not proven that it sounds any better than that file from the Apple TV to the Naim. A comparison - ie better than - requires actually listening to both.

It's analog, your using the internal DAC of the Ipod which is crap. The Wadia dock is the only dock licensed by Apple to bypass the internal DAC.

Yes, in order for Apple to allow the bypass of their dac, licensing fees are charged and Apple is apparently asking a stiff fee.........
Yes, but some companies use USB and allow direct control of the iPod from the AVR. Does it have to be digital over USB?
Yes it has to be digital over USB.

Do note in most cases it's the receiver that's playing the music file not the ipod.
So don't use an ipod and pay the stiff premium. There are alternatives such as Zune.

There are new ones coming out. Anthem is going to have a digital dock on it's MRX receivers, Peachtree Audio has some integrated in to their amps and DACs, Denon has a digital iPod dock, and Cambridge Audio is coming out with a new one also. There is more than just the Wadia now.
