Most DVD recorders don't make great players, largely due to their 10 bit/54 MHz DAC's. Good DVD players tend to have 12 bit/108 MHz units.
A few DVD recorders have the better DAC's, such as most Sony's, a few high-end Philips models which have long-been discontinued, and I believe the more expensive Toshiba's and JVC's.
