Is There A Media Player Solution?

1232 Views 6 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Status
I've been doing my research. I've been digging around and checking out all sorts of media servers, media players, media streamers, tin cans and wire...etc. From what I've seen it just doesn't seem like there's a product out there for me, yet. Am I missing something?

My Requirements (play media from a NAS drive and WMCE box):

- Component solution (if I want a PC next to my TV I can do that, but I don't want that).

- Straight forward enough so that my wife will use it!

- Play Divx and XviD content (downloaded OTA HD content, mostly) - primary use

- .mp3 media player off a server.

- 1080p/HDMI (yes, I know that most content isn't at 1080p).

- Wired/Wireless...don't give a rip, I've got a 1 gig network and 802.11n network.

- Extra candy...HD DVR - this is not a requirement, but the Tvix can have me hoping.

I've looked at a bunch of solutions, but none of them really seem to fit the bill.

Dlink-520 - Might fight the bill as a $150 intermediary step

Netgear EVA8000 - leader of the pack, is about 80% there. Plays Xvid and Divx.

Tvix (3000, 4000 & 5000) - nice bits, but not ready for prime time quite yet, no HDMI

Mvix - some good bits there too, but not quite ready yet.

Buffalo - Haven't found any solid information or specs on these...even from the company site.

Sling - blech, come on!

SageTV - doesn't cut it

Linksys - they seem behind, I'd expect them to come out with something soon.

Xbox360 - Does not really do XviD or DivX, only really WMC video (currently has one).

What it really looks like is that development is still in it's infantacy. There are about 10 key features and most of the products only cover about 4-8 of them. Am I missing something? Other options?

Earlier thread isn't exactly the same, but gives you the general idea ...

Yes, I read that one earlier somewhat similar. Thanks for the reminder. I'd also forgotten to put up that I have a Xbox360. It serves the music great, but fails completely with the XviD and DivX. The 360 was an upgrade from a STD Xbox with Media Center Extender.

Have you tried looking into these (tversity or googling for "Easy DivX to Xbox 360 Streaming") for DIVX?
the dlink-520 is elegant in it's simplicity... hd divx/xvid mp3/wavs play great-- great remote

the thing with this one is at least its features work, but it's light on features

but there is there is a looming firmware--

as long as you manage the server, anyone can use this player, also its light on using power, so i leave mine on all the time... it never locks up--

I have the tvix 4100 as a second player, but it's gonna take a while to work out it's bugs

I got DivX streaming to work on my 360, but if I even looked at my media server while it was streaming (3.0Ghz machine with 2 gigs of ram) both the media server and 360 locked up.

Not an acceptable solution.

I'm leaning towards picking up a 520 for $150ish as an intermediate solution. Then at least I'll have something around to help me take the edge off.
