I have the Hughes receiver, but don't use it for DirecTv yet. I got the receiver on super clearance because it was a demo unit, and it didn't have a card. So, for now, I'm just using it to get local OTA channels and piping them to my 8 year old tv. Anyway, it's hooked up to the satellite dish and I get the guide perfectly fine, but it's still at 5046. I'd like to go to 5099 because the grey bars drive me crazy! Is there any sure fire way to do it without having a subscription to DirecTv?

I don't know where you are located, but consider that there have been many recent threads mentioning channel mapping problems with Hughes, Mitsubishi and Toshiba receivers. The upgrade may work perfectly well for you -- I don't know. Consider that many of the problems others have experienced recently are directly related to the 5099 update.


Be careful that you are not creating more problems for yourself than changing the grey bars would be worth.
