Is there an alternative to Directv's HD DVR junk?

3468 Views 4 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  bfdtv
Are there 3rd party HD DVRs out there that will work with Directv, or do I have to use whatever Directv gives me? My Directv HR21 (HD DVR) is on its last legs and having all sorts of problems. I really hate this thing even when it works as it's supposed to.

I think there is supposed to be a new Tivo + Directv HD DVR eventually, but that might be a while off. I saw some satellite DVRs for sale online, but can't tell if they would work with Directv. Any suggestions?

Unfortunately, there are no alternatives at this time. You're stuck with whatever DirecTV provides. As you note, a new high-definition DirecTiVo is expected early next year.

If possible, you might try to find a HR20 as a replacement. The HR20 is somewhat more responsive (less laggy) than the HR21/HR22/HR23.

Ah well. Thanks for the info. Directv will replace the dying piece of junk I have with a new piece of junk free of charge, so at least I will have something to use until the Tivo version comes out. I'll just go to a happy place while I wait for my remote control's keystrokes to register....

If you are using the OTA add-in module, you might try removing that. Some people find their DirecTV DVR much more responsive with that disconnected.
