Has anyone heard anything regarding Replay and HD? I just recently got my HD Satellite setup going and I'm finding myself watching HD as much as possible. When I go to regular def I just keep thinking "this would look so good in Hi Def".

I don't want to have to change to Tivo for HD since I really love the replay streaming features (I just bought a 400 GB drive just for DVArchive).

FWIW, if your HD receiver has an S-Video output, you can tune to an HD show and feed the HD 16x9 image to your RTV and record it. When you play it back, even though it will be in standard def, it will still look vastly superior to anything on the analog channels (due to the superior quality of the source material), and it will also fill the screen of your 16x9 monitor. If you use the componet output of the Replay, it will look even better in 480p

As I have beeen investigating what rbienstock has proposed, I've come to the following conclusions:

1) Time Warner's box works the best with RTV since it: outputs on all output formats simultaneously, redirects the HD subchannels to regular station numbers, can be controlled by the RTV through IR, maintains the anamorphic sqeeze required to fill an 16x9 screen.

2) OTA is the next best option since you don't have to pay for it. The major limitation is that you must find a receiver that can be controlled by the RTV, and you will likely have to run Wirns to get the channel guide. A secondary annoyance, if you are in such an area, is that the RTV can only tune to the default channel for that receiver' if an HD channel is the .2 channel, you will likely not be able to tune it.

3) None of the current satellite providers has a decent solution for using the RTV. If you are willing, go with the DirecTivo HD box.

4) RTV shows no sign of improving support for OTA receivers.

Amazingly Smooth-

Was Voom included in your research?- I'm curious if they placed any higher than DirecTV HD offerings...

My understanding is that Voom uses a Motorola box that does not output downconverted HD as anamorphic--it uses letterbox. It appears that Voom's box also does not properly integrate the locals so that you must use two RTV inputs; unfortunately the RTV only has one svideo input.

For me the priorities are:

1) Simultaneous HD and SD outputs

2) Downconverted HD as anamorphic on SD outputs

3) Local and non-local HD sharing one output

4) Cheaper

5) Easy to use

Cheers

Robert - That is an interesting idea. I have a Sony HD-200 receiver. I'll need to do some testing when I get a little time.

Thanks,

Well, here's what I did with my Replay 4160 and Hughes HTL-HD before I got the HD Tivo (I still do this for stuff I want to save to DVD):

I feed the HTL-HD simultaneous 480i output to the Replay's S-video input.

I have a Replay channel set up for LOST on Wednesday night, starting 5 minutes early (6:55PM for me here in the Central time zone).

I have a weekly timer set up on the HTL-HD itself to turn to 30-1 (the ABC station here) at 6:59PM.

The Replay not only records LOST in stunning 16x9 (it's the best looking show on HDTV other than live sports), but retains the description in the Replay Guide as well!

Here's where things REALLY get good...

I then use WinReplayPC or DVArchive to transfer the show to my PC. It plays on the PC as a 4x3 mpeg where everyone is tall and skinny. This is good, we take care of it later.

I use Womble to cut out the commercials. The edited file is still 4x3 with everyone tall and skinny.

I use DVD Patcher ( http://www.videohelp.com/download/DVDPatcher_v106.zip ) to change just the HEADERS of the edited file from 4x3 to 16x9. I leave the bitrate and resolution the way they are, and tell it to patch the entire file. Now I have a 16x9, 720x480, 6000kbps mpeg file.

I import that new 16x9 mpeg file into TMPGEnc DVD Author (actually I do two episodes per disc), and author and burn.

Result: Fantastic looking, not just 4x3 letterboxed, but genuine 16x9 DVD's.

Samsung OTA receivers can be driven by the Replay if you tell it it's a Samsung DirecTV box.

Here in Seattle I get complete OTA downconverted HD recording because our local channels happen to have OTA channel numbers that match the local DirecTV guide data. Works great with a Samsung SIR-T151.

I thought I would chime in with my current setup.

I have a n HD3200 Cable box from TW cable. It can output downcoverted s-video along with component outputs at the same time. So the S-video goes to the replay and the component feed goes to an Audio Authority Component Video auto-switch.

If I set a show to record in HD it tunes the cable box and all I do is turn off the Replay (it keeps recording) and the auo-switch switches to the true HD component video feed. If I need to pause or move back to the replay I simply turn the Replay back on and the switch does it's thing. It is fast and automatic.

Note I do not use the component out from the replay. I have all my s-video devices leading into a sima svs-4d autoswitcher and then the output from that runs to a new Marantz VQ2400 which converts s-video or composite to component 480i, that than leads into the Audio Authority Component Video Switch. The picture looks great and then everything in my whole system feeds into my TV on a single component video input. It is the ultimate in simplicity (once it is wired :) )
