At the DBS Forum, DTV users have told me that we can't use the same hard drive with different units. So, if we got a new DTV unit, change providers, etc.-- we would no longer be able to access the programs we had recorded onto the old hard drive with a new unit.

I'm a local performer who records a lot of music, plays, etc. for my performimg work that I want to be able to go back and reference years from now. For example, I recorded onto VHS A Little Night Music. Then eight years later, they were doing the show in my area, and I found the video to help me with my auditons and rehearsals.

I was hoping to be able to do the same thing with a hard drive or some other device, so I could save these programs in HD and gain more living space (tapes and DVDs hold less time and take up more space).

So, is there anyway with DTV, TiVo, Comcast, other providers, computers, etc.-- I could always access the programs I would record on a hard drive or another device, no matter how many years, decades have passed, even when units and tech might change?

If not now, are there any future plans by any companies to produce a hard drive or some other device where HD programs could be played over multiple platforms, and thus, more easily archived?

Or, will we ever see Blu-Ray Recoders for TVs, and if we do, will they have less problems than Std. DVD recorders?

The TivoHD allows you to download high-definition recorded files to your computer. Those recordings can then be played or edited on your computer, burned to Blu-ray or DVD (AVCHD format) for playback in Blu-ray players, or streamed to a PS3, Xbox360, and other DLNA compatible devices.

No satellite DVRs are available with such a download feature, so with those services, you are limited to HD component capture with a PC device like the Hauppauge HD PVR.
