You need optical to get >2 channels - RCA is stereo only.

For a stereo-only playback environment, they're probably equivalent. Although you're really missing out if you're not gaming in 5.1. Gears of War with a Paradigm Seismic 12 is a wonderful thing

There is an coax(rca) connector for digital audio that is identical to the optical cable, but the 360 does not support this ---- I had to get an external optical + component switcher to make the 360 play-nice with the rest of the system.

The RCA audio connector on the 360 cable is analog stereo audio only though.

If your talking optical vs digital coaxial. They are the same as they both deliver a digtal signal to yur amplifer.

But as far as standard RCAs (red and white cables) the best you can get is stereo. Your amplifer maybe able to matrix the 2 channels into 5-7 but it will never compare to a 5.1 dolby digital/DTS/PCM signal.

I my self use the A1s 5.1 analog outs. And on the 360 the optical is used.
