Is this a good deal for a Showstopper?

I can get a PVHS2000 (30 hr) for 279.95 at a Panasonic service center. I would be able to get a $100 rebate afterwards.

It is not bad, that's what I got before. There are better deals for open boxes at CC and Best Buys, but they are a lot more rare and the open box units are frequently pretty beat up- at least the one I considered at local Circuit City had scratches and dings all over the front panel.

The one I got from service center was in the original box, fully stocked with all cables and working remote, had IR emitter which was not in use before (had the glue pads on it). On the other hand the unit seems to be initialized and had a record of a couple of shows with a dial up number of the area where the service center was, possibly because they wanted to make sure it worked. All I needed to do is read the Rob's FAQ (top of the forum page) and change the number and choose my area cable provider. It takes a month to get a rebate but some people reported recently having trouble getting theirs. I, personally, found Panasonic to be one of the best companies to wait for rebate from- I waited for Prime Peripherials rebate for 9 months, and Xirlink rebate for 7 months, Staples on average 3.5 months and Microsoft for 1 month. Be sure to make copies of all rebate info and send it with a receipt notification, it will cost you a buck or two and guarantee that you will receive a 100.

The best online price for a brand new 30-hour ShowStopper is at this Yahoo! store :
Yahoo! store

$395 + $10-20 S&H - $100 MIR = $305

Obviously open-box specials & refurbs involve an element of risk. Do you get a warranty or is it sold "as is" ?
Is the Panasonic service center local to you

or

is it available online?
It's local to me, Boston suburbs. It's in box, no refurb, only 2 left. Sounds like a good deal, not sure where to put it though. I already have a 30 hr. ReplayTV in the main room I watch TV that I use an IR device to use in a 2nd room. I could put in my bedroom, but I'm a light sleeper and I think the noises would bother me, plus I don't have a phone jack near the TV in my bedroom
i bought my first SS from a panasonic service center for about $240 after the $100 rebate

most of these sold by the service centers are actually brand-new units that were returned by dealers...mine was completely sealed in the box...looked like it have neve been opened or upacked before

I need to change my cable provider, but have been unable to figure out how and didn't see anything in the FAQ I read. I go to Menu-->Setup-->Change Dialing&Input Settings, but the screen to choose providers never appears.

Could you elaborate how its s/b done. Thanks.

Go to menu - setup - change dialing & input settings. Now select Change ANT/CATV. Continue through this menu and you will get to the cable provider list. It is possible the provider you want isn't one of the options. In that case you can play around using other nearby phone numbers or zipcode in setup and you may find it. If not you'll have to call replay tech support.
