Is this subwoofer doable? Trying to make a subwoofer cabinet

1996 Views 72 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  Sornox
Hi all.

Please don’t bash me. I’m here to learn.

We are renovating the house, and we opened up the living room on the kitchen, but once I’ve installed the tv on the wall, all we see is the wire from the side. Huge eye sore since all the traffic is coming toward this ( from the right of the picture, toward the left. 3d sketchup visual representation Of living room and kitchen

So I’m trying to find a way to not see the wire and all the input output from the tv.

I wanted to upgrade the subwoofer.

So I draw this, and my gf, which is very picky, almost said yes.
Before going any further in the convincing steps, I wanted to know if this would be a good idea and if this could sound good as a sub woofer.

Wood Floor Flooring Shade Electrical wiring

Dimension i have would be:
Height, variable, but somewhere between
48 and 88in.
Depth is 10-15 inch.
Width is 12.5inch.

Which would give me between 3.47 to 9.54 cubic feet.

I never designed a subwoofer before, and I’d like to make sure I’d plausible and doable before going any further with my gf.

Thanks guys!

Plausible and doable.

Comes down to what size woofer or woofers can you do, and making sure the other parameters like air velocity and resonance are where they should be.

You could even downforce it and recess it under enough it’s not visible at all.

You are probably looking at either 8 or 10” driver(s) given your constrains, and a ported box to get the most bang for your buck.

Something like that with 4-6 JBL 12s would be pretty neat

Don’t think he’s got enough width for the JBLs. They are 12 1/2 or 12 1/4 width so he’s RIGHT on the edge of that….

I’d suggest going with Dayton UM8 or UM10 (and multiple if he can)

Not quite sure to understand what downforce it mean.

But I could put the drive on the bottom face and not see the driver, is that what you meant?

4-6 like in how many driver I should have in that box?

The sub would be a miles ahead of the rest of my set up!

More cone more better. You're talking to a guy who currently has about 200 dollars worth of LCR/surrounds and dual 18s for subs lol. But the subs came first since the speakers I want aren't in stock.

4-6 12s is pretty mild for this board as you'll learn.

A 12 will work... just. May need to adjust the front panel thickness so by the time you get to the side walls (12.5" - 3/4"x2 = 11") you're not constrained by your cutout dims.

For example, this: Home

Has a 12.43" OD on the outside, a 11.18" cutout. I'd make the front panel triple thick; bolt it to double 11.25" cutouts, by the time the driver slides in the basket will have gotten small enough that the box 11" internal width won't be a problem. The final outside layer is just aesthetic.

Anyway, couple of those should move some air, sealed or vented.

I could definitely put a couple of driver in the living room.
I have 2x the space from the drawing (one on the other side of the cabinet too)

Where you guys would put the driver? On the face I guess? And you would arrange them in a line? Like this:

That’s about the price of my 5.0 set up.
The sub is 250$ jamo s810, which is underwhelming at best.

Only thing is I don’t believe the wife would be happy to see 4 huge driver like this in the living room unfortunately!

You could always make some sort of mesh grille/cover for the cones so it looks a bit more pleasing... Or convince her that it's nice to look at the cones. ;)

Oh yeah, okay. Gotcha.

People believe that one wouldn’t be enough.
So Down firing would be for only one driver

Could I install them inside the box and only see the port, like a transmission line or something ??

I think a big mesh grille would be better, but someone more well versed in cabinet building will have a better answer than I do

Better be sure that is a good position for a sub before you build it and find out it is just a boom box in your room.

Yeah. The more I think about it the more the grill it will be.
That way when the gf is not there, I can remove the grill and see those magnificent cone working.

In the photo you linked, is this a 1099 or 1299 by chance?

Yeah, it's a 1099 center that some guy is selling in the Audio Gear section. Shamelessly stole his pic lmao

Haha! I like the look of those. I wouldn’t have the authorization to put them in the living room tho! Maybe one fat when we have a basement or somewhere to have a dedicated home theatre
