I recently purchased a Jamo (Philips) AVR-793 7.1 Surround Sound Receiver.

I was wondering if I could receive 5.1 surround sound if I used my Magnavox H2160 as a TV tuner and conected the coax digital out from the H2160 to the digital coax inupt on the Jamo receiver.

I'm told that some broadcast stations are now sending out 5.1 surround sound for some programs. I do not have cable.

I realize the Magnavox's tuner video is only SDTV, not HD. But all I want (if available) is the digital sound.

Any advice/comments would be very much appreciated!

AFAIK, no SD DVD recorder has ever output 5.1 audio from it's tuner (ATSC or QAM). The digital output is for DVD playback only.

Yep,you need a HD tuner that outputs the digital sound through optical, rca, or HDMI outputs so your receiver can decode it.

The old LG 4200a ATSC and cable QAM tuner does it, many of the better HD boxes on cable do as well but like he said none of our lowly DVD recorders with digital SD tuners do it
