This thread and poll complement another poll I left about protection provided by plug-in surge suppressors.

The following questions are basic issues regarding getting protection from a surge suppressor.

My house has a surge blast at the box all grounds go to the breaker box and i have surge

protection on all my media gear and a battery backup on my RG for U-verse.

Yes the first one was a Monster it self sacrificed and the non protected tv in another room during a storm and a neighbor lost a tree that was close had it hit at my house

i doubt that any surge protection I had would have helped judging by the area of bark

stripped down the tree he lost a lot of appliances.

My home theater gear is on a UPS/filter/regulator/protector - a must have to protect my 'spensive stuff.

This poll (and the other one) seem useless unless you also state where you live. In the SF Bay Area, lightning strikes are VERY infrequent and I have never heard of any damage due to a direct/close strike. Of course, that does not mean it does not happen. I am in my mid 50's and I can only remember about 3 good lightning storms in my lifetime....and I am sure those would all be considered insignificant by Midwestern standards.

Yes I realize that surges come from other sources too, but I have never seen any equipment in a home fail due to a surge. Industrial environments may be a different story. Maybe we just have a good distribution system.

With that said, I do have a cheap power line surge suppressor for my TV system....just in case!

We get summer power cycling brownouts/outages/surges where I live.


I've usually been good about having everything plugged into a surge suppressor, but for a few days I was lazy and plugged one of my PC's into the wall (was using the strip elsewhere). Lost that machine and the monitor (but the KVM switch ended up being okay).

Thanks for the reply. The poll is less about what is truly needed electrically, but what the user thinks s/he needs.

Such, its a test of basic surge suppressor knowledge. Granted, nearly everything has regional variation incude general knowledge, and the polls software here have limited ways to tie in responses. But if a user peruses the entire Internet, you'll find there is no poll like this on any forum, otherwise I would have opened the discussion there

I live in NJ power here is pretty good but I remember 2 or 3 times my dad had stuff blow out. He doesn't beleven in them much and he is a electrision, go figure. Anyhow I had a panamax self distruct a couple years agon and have had spikes. Now I put in a whole house surge supressor at the pannel and all my av equipnment goes through a monster, ps audio and hydra power filters. It makes a difference on most things for sound and image quality.


Surges are nto just because of lighting that is the extream case but they can be as simple as a loose wire outside your house causing a surge or a transformer blowing up. Truth is they happen and your equipnment may or may not surive the little plug in strips can help but really are not great protection.

"Equipment Warranty becomes invalid if any wire (AC, coax, phone or Ethernet)

or audio or video interconnect leading into the equipment comes from a component that is not properly protected by the PowerCente"

Thanks Oztech. That's what the SPD is supposed to do and you got your money's worth. Did Monster give you a new one as a replacement?


I see you're using the Panamax version now, a brand with a known good rep in the power industry.


Your profiles says you live in TX, so an SPD does serve you well:

No and I needed a replacement and Panamax on the spec sheet said lightning protection

yes and we all no nothing will take a direct hit but if you read some of the other brands

they say unplug unit in the event of a storm for most of us this is a major inconvenience

to run home from work and unplug just be sure and read what is covered under what

circumstances also APC and Furman are 2 more that are great.
