I am trying to determine the best way to connect an iScan HD+ into my system. My HDTV is a Zenith IQB64W10W RPTV. It will accept a 1080i signal via component video jacks or a VGA/RGB HD15 connector. Via the HD15 connector, it will display a 18I6 (1920x1080i) signal from the iScan with the TV in HD-DBS mode or a 480p signal with the TV in VGA mode. In both cases, the iScan is set to use RGB colorspace and composite sync. The 1080i signal looks better, of course. (I still don’t understand what the technical difference between the HD-DBS and VGA TV modes is though.)

My question is whether I should use the HD15 input as described above or use an HD15 to 3-RCA YPbPr cable to the component video jacks (with a 1080i signal). In general, which configuration would provide the best picture quality? The video source will be DVD and DirecTV.

Also, as a rule of thumb, should I send a 480p or a 480i signal from the DVD player (Panasonic RP91) to the iScan?

Thank you very much for your advice!

VGA-RGB should be the preferred method, unless you lose the operation of significant image controls on the display, in which case you can balance the quality verusus function issue.

Additionally, if you intend on connecting up an HD source via component video (which will pass-thru) you will want to use the component input on your display so that this signal is displayed correctly. The iScan HD+ will not transcode an HD component input to an RGBHV output.
