ISF Calibration Guidelines

725 Views 7 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  drjeckl
I think I'm about to embark on an ISF calibration exercise and I'm wondering if anyone has any good documentation on a scope of work or checklist; things to ask a potential outfit. Also anything on a list of minimal test equipment that they should bring to the job?

My setup is a Sammy HLP5063W with a DirecTV HR10-250 on the DVI input and a Sony DVP-NS975V on the HDMI input. I'm assuming that the calibration should be done for both inputs (probably cost extra).

I just haven't seen anything in this forum that discusses this activity, which I assume will be exploding shortly. Anybody got anything?

Thanks...jce

I'm getting ready to buy a new set (Hitachi 57X500) and I've seen the reports about ISF Calibration but I'm wondering...

A) What is ISF Calibration?

B) How do you find someone who does it?

C) How much does it cost and is it worth it?

ISF (Imaging Science Foundation) calibration is fine tuning a TV with 1) an ISF certified technician and 2) done with state-of-the-art test equipment. The tuning usually includes optimizing:

- Black Level (aka Brightness)

- White Level (aka Contrast)

- Chroma Level (aka Color)

- Chroma Phase (aka Tint)

- Sharpness

It's needed to bring out the best of your gear. OOB settings are usually poor. You can try calibrating yourself with Digital Video Essentials (DVE) or the AVIA DVDs, but if you want a pro to do it, you need to hire one.

You can find calibrators thru http://www.imagingscience.com/ Some of them have web sites that provide more info. That's how I started.

I have seen prices for my area (LI/NYC) starting at $300, which given that I spent nearly $5K for my three boxes, will probably turn out to be a wise investment.

I'm just asking if someone has any detailed guidelines on what was done and what gear was used. Not sure there is much out there.

If you check the "Panasonic DLP has landed" thread, Topp goes through an ISF calibration in a bit of detail. Check pages 22 and 38.

Thanks for the pointer. It's ok as a description of what Topp found for that set but I'm looking for something a little more rigorous; a checklist of what should be tuned and what gear should be used. I'll keep searching.

Yeah I've seen that but I think it's a bit stale. It has some good things in it.

Thanks.
