I'm working on installing a 60A subpanel dedicated to my HT room.


Is there any benefit to installing isolated ground outlets to power the AV gear (e.g. amplifiers, processor, etc..)?


I saw some of these outlets at HD which made me think of this:

They are used in commercial and industrial applications where the ground lead and connection needs to be isolated from the conduit (electrical wiring is run in conduit [or BX cable] and the conduit functions as ground). Therefore IG outlets have no useful purpose in a residential setting and are not worth the expense.


Upgrading your outlets is a worthwhile endeavor, but all you need for that is commercial spec-grade devices. They’re as robust as IG outlets and a lot cheaper.

Any links to commercial spec-grade outlets? I was thinking of the PS Audio outlets but $50 each is on the painful side.

Any hardware store will sell them from Bryant, Cooper, Leviton etc. – typically $5-6 or less. Look for the ones that back-wire with screw-down clamps.

I just bought a bunch from HD for a commercial job: Leviton 20-amp spec-grade units, for just over $4 each. By the way, 15-amp and 20-amp receptacles are identical inside; the only difference is the T-slot. You only need one if your gear has a 20-amp plug. Code permits 15-amp receptacles on 20-amp circuits (as long as it's not a single receptacle, like an A/C socket); even one duplex is okay.
