There was a little run where many top end TV were curved to the dismay of most consumers. I love curved TVs at 65" sitting 6 feet away, both for movies including 3D and especially for console gaming. I'd like to see some high end curved options at 85" now that I am looking to upgrade in 2020 in anticipation that cheap 5G systems will allow the additional bandwidth company(s) can use to quickly give us quality 4K and 8K broadcasts including the upcoming Olympics. If LCD wants to continue to distinguish from OLED, it should offer more option varieties such as curved and 3D as many WILL pay a $500 premium for those features.
It seems it's always all or nothing in the TV business - Curved Screens? Please!?

Agreed. Curved TV's are beautiful and if you care at all about an authentic cinematic experience, curved should be the way to go.
Not sure why LG abandoned their curved OLED's. I wasn't in the market at the time but I remember seeing and hearing about them. I'm wondering with the rise of new tech like MiniLED, dual panel and MicroLED, if curved screens will make a come back. I'd hope so, as the more recent edge lit curved screens just don't offer the same level of contrast needed to enjoy movies properly.
I think TCL had a curved screen at a trade show, if I remember. I wonder if they'd try dipping their toes in soon for mass release.

There is nothing authentic about curving an already square and uniform image.
I agree, and you cant make the argument at 55" or even 90". Now you start getting into imax size, yea, then its immersive but not authentic.
Also, if you want authentic, then projector is the way to go. I love my projector and my led tvs, but I know the go to when i want to feel like im at theater is always the projector.
Actually there is, the way movies are presented in theaters are on a curved screen. I'm not sure if you've ever noticed that. Anyone wanting to preserve that experience at home will likely love a curved screen.
Agreed, the projector is the way to go absolutely. But for someone without those means, that wants a more cinematic experience, a curved TV is a preferable option.
The screen for a projector, should ideally also be curved for movie watching.

You might want to poll that.
Curve screens look cool but not practical for home IMHO. I remember seeing Cleopatra' How the West was Won back in the 60's on a real Curved cinema scope screen ' I think it was like 2.65 or 85. You had to turn your head to see all the picture. It was killer.
I'd poll it in a movie enthusiast forum, certainly not here lol.
I also would agree they are meant for a singular viewing experience. The "enhanced viewing angle" aspect of the marketing is bullcrap. If you have a curved screen you need to be seated directly in front, ideally at a 5ft distance (depending on size).

Actually there was a poll here about this, followed up by an Article by Scott W including an even bigger poll.
A resounding 85% of responders voted against curved screens. Curved sales were also low. The market had spoken, and the manufacturers listened.

the Curve was ideal for me
I was lucky to be able to find a close-out (at 33% of MSRP) of a JS9000 Curve w/3D as I already had an existing (location limited by wall construction and existing shelf) corner wall mount.
Due to the mount's distance from the corner, a 55" flat was largest I could use, but the curve allowed me to mount a 65".

edit:- I should add that at the time of my 2014 flat screen purchase, I couldn't appreciate the extra cost of the curve.
No doubt, a marketplace failure will discourage manufactures from making them. However we've seen idea's revisited. Remember 'the last convertible' in 1976, they came back into production just a few years later.
It was only my realization of the curve's allowing for a larger screen for my corner restricted mount, along with the 'close-out' pricing and 3D going away that influenced me to add a 2015 TV to my excellent 2014 TV (open sig, hidden below).

See there's a problem though, because every user isn't a movie enthusiast, and have not actually tried or bought a curved screen before voting. It's not a fair sampling. In a Sophie's choice scenario, I'd even chose flat for the market as well. Most consumers use a TV for far more than just movies or games. So I'd take those results with a grain of salt. The majority of the casual market aren't movie enthusiasts either (as much as they'd like to claim), and curved panels are usually more expensive to their flat counterparts, so of course the majority of consumer would go with the cheaper screen if features are the same. Also, a majority of consumers hate change. If they've had flat panels before, they go with what they know works for them. Of course I wouldn't bother with a curved panel for football, or news.
Also, these aren't polls about preserving the movie theater experience at home, as I mentioned. I wouldn't poll it here. Naturally a projector is the way to go in any scenario (ideally with a curved screen), but a curved TV would be the next best choice, if only manufacturers continued to make them. The last Samsung model on the market is not great. The curved OLED panels of years past are the great examples. With ironed out tech and the better quality control of today, they would be a masterstroke of the definitive movie experience at home (aside from and 4K HDR projection). Preference and polls aside, that's just the way it is.

There were two reasons,
1. People did not like them, and
2. More importantly, people did not buy them.
With prices on their way down for OLED, LG should branch out and dip their toes back in with a quality curved OLED. I bet they'd be surprised with the response from the market today.

Totally agree with the poll and what everyone else has said about the gimmicky nature of curved screens for film viewing. With that said I sit about 4 feet from an 88" curved screen (I wont go into it but at the time to get HDR + FALD in a large screen format without tons of input lag it was the ONLY choice and I was locked into a time frame) that I use only for console gaming and it is glorious. I cannot say if the curve has anything to do with that as it is kind of absurd to sit that close to such a large screen but I do suspect it helps a little. Again this is purely for peasanty console gaming (which I enjoy frequently...PCMR sacrilege I know) but I do love it and might actually consider it again for this specific use case.
