I was all set to buy the Sammy 165, then I read somewhere that the 165 isn't compatible with digital cable which is modulated in the QAM format.

My question is: Does it matter if the digital TV signal comes from the cable STB or feed in direct into the 165?

Jay,


The only STBs that decode QAM are the Scientific Atlanta and Motorola boxes provided by the cable company (in most markets). If you are utilizing cable for all signals, I don't think there is any reason to buy an aftermarket box. If you are planning on using an antenna for local DTV OTA channels, then the SIR-T165 would be appropriate for that. The only ponential reason for connecting the cable to the Sasmung would be to use it to upconvert the signal instead of your TV.

If you own a Mits HDTV upgradeable set, you can purchase the "Promise Module" which includes 1394 and a QAM 256 in the clear tuner.

Well, I finally got more info from my cable provider. They said at the end of June they will make Hi-Def STB available. These will receive OTA plus be able to decode QAM. The sales rep. I spoke with didn't have much more info than that.

Hitachi also supports this too.
