I am having troubles "sending" a show to my in-house 5508 which as been modded to be compatible with IVS for the sake of in-house send/receive shows via the replay guide (not stream).

While the 5508 can add the 5040 to its address book, the 5040 cannot add the 5508 to its address book for some reason.

At first, I had both using the same port, and even though I typed in the 5508's ID, the 5040 connected to itself!

So, I changed the port ID to something unique on the 5508 (and updated my router config to open that port up). And, now the 5040 simply cannot find the 5508. In 243-zones, it can "see" the 5508, but it can't add it to its address book.

Any takers on this weird situation?

Thanks,

The guy who wrote that is cool in my book. He asked how to do it. After he figured it out he wrote out the steps for others. He's an anti-thesis (did't I just use that word somewhere else?) to the occasional AVS power sniffing clam mouth.
Thanks icecow, I wrote those directions, and I'm glad to hear I'm cool in your book.

Then again, I never posted them directly to the board, so maybe I'm more of a power sniffing clam mouth.:(

I've been sending those directions (or now an updated version of them) to anybody who has bothered to PM me and asked for help (like I said I would in the thread that started all of this). I guess now that it's clear that the dreaded Bad Thing isn't going to happen, I don't really care that it's circulating in the open, though I don't know how much I like the idea of other people taking credit for it. (Especially if they're going to gain coveted icecow cool points.)

I guess information just wants to be free.

What is reported for your 5508 at: http://www.lhaven.net/ivstest/ ?

Does it pass the IVS test the same as your 50XX?

Two things... does your router support loopback? Check the list in a thread I started a while back. Loopback and Lyndon are in the title.

The other thing, as you discovered don't share the same port that won't work.

I just discovered recently that I had a 5504 configured to send and it worked fine some times. Other times the receiving box would report "network errors". I discovered (after hours of trouble shooting) that I never opened a port for the 5504, all my 5k boxes have open ports, but not the 5504. Once I opened the port everthing worked better.

I can only suspect that the receiving unit does try to contact the sending unit. I've asked several if they can confirm this, but no one has given me an answer yet.

Which point of the IVS process are you talking about here? During the transfer, the receiving unit definitely contacts the sending unit. An IVS transfer is a pull operation, rather than a push one. I.e., the receiving unit connects to, and pulls/retrieves a show from, the sending unit (instead of the sending unit pushing the show to the receiving unit). It is all actually just an HTTP-based download by the receiving unit, with a little proprietary IVS stuff thrown into the mix.

Hey guys, thanks for the ideas. I used the IVS check link and found out that the new Replay was not setup properly via my router.

It didn't occur to me that both needed to be available via the public Internet -- I just assumed I could do IVS via my LAN... but of course that doesn't make sense since ReplayTV manages this process centrally.

I think I'm good to go now... thanks.

Thanks j.m. the problems I had all make sense. I had thought that after the replay server give out the receiving box's IP the sending unit would push the show. I guess that's just push the message a show is sent. Then the receiving box pulls the show.

Now, I'm really curious how the first tests we did (remember the test movies?) I didn't have the port forwarding enabled then either, and if I recall you received the show ok... right?

Yeah, I did. Didn't you have it set up differently then? Maybe you had the ReplayTV in the DMZ. I don't know. It worked though.

Anyway, you've got it right. The sender does send a notification to the receiver that X file is available. The receiver then connects to the sender to retrieve X file.

I've been IVSing with a modded 55xx for a few months now (HD upgrade) and before this weekend never had any problems. Now I most (if not all) of my transfers get stuck after a certain point and I get the "experiencing network errors" message. My inernet connection is certainly fine, and the net meter in 243-zones shows incoming and outgoing traffic.

I haven't changed any router settings in a while and I'm stumped as to what it could be.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!
