hi all,

a friend of mine is jackson is going to be doing a home theater/audio install in the near future and has asked for some guidance from me.

(more proof that in the land of the blind, the man with one eye is king)

i was wondering if anyone here knew of any good high end stores in or around jackson. i know one place sales meridian but for the life of me i cannot remember their name.

Audio Associates is in Madison, MS--not sure if that's near Jackson. They sell high end stuff at great prices. Paul Haines is the contact, 601-898-3727.

Audio Associates in Madison is just north of Jackson, MS. off of I-55. This is a great place to get some great prices on some Aerial Speakers, if interested.

i called Audio Associates and spoke to the most irritating sales guy. i told him i was doing some of the footwork for a friend in Jackson who was looking to put together a home theater/music system.

he was stunned that i was calling from Texas. then he went on to talk about how bad of a choice my friends new home location was.

i told him that my friend was looking for high-end equipment but was not an audio "enthusiast". he just wants a good high end system.

i had to ask him what equipment lines they carried 5 times (no hyperbole). each time he evaded the question. once he tried to give the name of some place in Arkansas. i got the impression they did not want to do business with non audiophiles.

i know Mississippi is the 3rd world of the US, but still.

so are there any other places in Jackson? one caveat, they must actually want to do business.

Well, you probably talked to Paul. He likes to talk, but he's a nice guy, so maybe you caught him on a bad day. If your friend wants a local dealer and the "best" equipment at the best price, you've already talked to the only game in town.

Not to be too direct, but what kind of budget was your friend looking at?

"High end" means different things to different people. Paul specializes in high end stuff, and it's expensive. Putting together a system using his "affordable" lines could easily top $25K, just for the audio equipment. His true high end stuff would run well over $100K...again, just for the audio part. If these figures are out of line with what your friend is thinking, Paul may have been trying to guide you somewhere else.

I'm not trying to defend him or make excuses, but you have to realize that Paul deals in Porsches and Ferraris, so if you're helping a friend buy a Honda, there's not much he can do. If, however, your friend is looking for a Porsche or a Ferrari, I defy you to find a better deal.

the funny thing is, i own a Porsche and would never buy a car from someone who treated me like that. selling high end anything is no excuse for poor customer service.

but what kind of budget was your friend looking at?

to be honest, if someone wants to buy from my business for $50 or $50k i will listen to them. and not decide in the first few minutes i don't need their business. he just did not want to talk to me. just that simple.

my friend will porbably buy whatever i suggest. i was going to suggest meridian but that is right out the window now.

"High end" means different things to different people

I agree. that is why i was so irked when i had to ask a number of times about the lines they carry. i can make the distinction as to whether or not the equipment will be a good fit.

I think what will happen is we will end up going to tyler acoustics to audition some of their equipment. or there is a place in austin i have bought a few things from who i liked.

i would prefer to have it all come from a local shop so that when there is a problem, my friend can get help. but a flight from texas to miss is not that expensive.

Jim!!

I happen to work for the best AV company in Mississippi! What a lucky day for you! (Ok, maybe a little biased, but we have to be)..

It's Audio Video Specialists in Hattiesburg (About 1.5 hours south, but we do make house calls to Jackson). our high-end lines include Krell, Rotel, and B&W.. Our lower line includes Polk and Yamaha.. We do a little retail, but our main focus is custom systems, so we try to work with what the customer likes and not what we have 8 of in the back..

You're welcome to give any of us a call during the work week at 601-268-1818, or you can give me a call on my cell phone this weekend to talk, 601-299-1348..

We have the the B&W 802's on demo if your friend wants to make a trip to listen to these amazing speakers..

Thanks,

Kevin D.

Kevin,

great! it will talk to my buddy and see about his schedule. they are going to be closing on the new house mid next month (or are at least scheduled to do so). so we are probably looking at a late july/early august time frame.

do you guys have a webpage with any other info?

Well, you can do what you want, but to dismiss an entire product line based on a phone call seems a bit hasty to me. Especially when the person you were talking to you could have saved you $20-40K off a full blown Meridian setup, depending upon how crazy you want to go. Paul is anything but arrogant, so I'm still a little bit puzzled with all this--he's always been honest and straightforward with me. Obviously, you're going to give your business to whomever you think deserves it...I assume your friend agrees with you.

For what it's worth, Krell doesn't have any authorized dealers in Mississippi. Caveat emptor.

well, it is the beginning of a fairly long process of listening, talking, reading, blah, blah. and i still want to go to kentucky to audition some tyler acoustics. i have never heard them and have heard good things about them.

my friend and his wife are more patient with people than i am (that's why they stayed in medicine, while i left). i get a pretty short fuse when i think i am being talked down to, disrespected, etc. so they may end up going there.

ultimately, it is not my business, i just guide and give opinions. they know me and my ... quirks. so they can take what i say with a grain of salt. i just happen to know more about audio stuff than they do.

thanks for the info though.

Jim,

Nope no web-page. We actually do pretty well with no advertising at all. Just keep the numbers handy and we'll be glad to take care of you..

As for the comment about Krell... As I said in my last message, our company is about designing systems for what people want. That is why we have the dealership agreements for Krell, Lexicon, and others with open invitations to become low volume dealers sitting in our files. Honestly, we're in Mississippi and not in one of the larger markets of Mississippi. Krell is not that high in demand around here, but it is in our arsenal if the need (read: customer) arises..

I do appreciate you looking out for our fellow forum members though.

Its a little farther away, but if he wants to make the drive there is an excellent store in Birmingham, Alabama. Its called Audio Forest and is a branch of the same store in Atlanta. They are extremely knowledgeable and carry a fairly wide range of products, mostly being the High-end.

Their product lines are:

*Boulder, Halcro, YBA, Sim Audio (Moon), Audio Refinement, Cambridge Audio, Panasonic, and Sony for Electronics.

*JM Labs and Amphion for Speakers (they may be picking up Snell as well)

*Sony, Panasonic, and Dream Vison for TVs and Projectors.

*Premeir, Lovan, and Atlantis for racks.

*They also custom build some speakers of their own as well as all their interconnects.

They are the only Authorized dealer in the Southeast for several of those higher lines. Their store in either Birmingham or Atlanta is well worth the visit if you get a chance!

If your interested the owner is Mike Blair and you can contact him at (205) 995-1966. Be sure to let him know Brandon had you call. He loves to talk to anyone about A/V equipment and is very easy to talk to.

Good Luck,

Brandon

Please lets read the rules here first before advertising. Please make it known you are related to that business. Your invite to see the best, in our area, is still good anytime as we talked about before.
