Has anyone heard this subwoofer? I need a bandpass setup to hide in a closet, but I have a hard time paying $2100 for a 10" sub that might not fill my room, when I currently have a $800 velodyne 15" that kicks a$$. My room is 18x16 with one side open to the kitchen, and I want this thing to perform. If it does, then it is worth every penny, but can a 10" really be worth that kind of dough?????

Why do you think a BP sub is more suitable for a closet tha other subs?
I was going to use the Triad Bronze/6 sub, which mounts between the studs and has a regular looking speaker grill cover, but Triad told me that for my size of room that I would need to use two of these units to achieve enough output. That's $2800 for the pair, when I am happy with the output of my $800 Velodyne, but don't have a place for a floorstanding sub. I am willing to spend more than $800, but not three times more.

I have tons of room in the adjacent closet, but I only have 14.5" of width between the studs, so that is where I started considering the bandpass option with a nice small grill on the wall to hide the port.

I am about to take the 12" Eclipse Pro woofers out of my Tahoe and build 14.5" wide boxes between two sets of studs and drop my Crown 400 wattx2 amplifier on those bad boys. My 12's were $300 each, and the amp was $300, so I could have the whole deal done for under $1000. Makes it hard to see the value in a 10" unit that costs $2100.
Don't settle for second best, get a sub that's better than your velodyne AND goes in the closet...Infinite Baffle
Ahem....why don't you just cut a 14" x 15" sized hole in the friggin' sheetrock, put your Velo in the closet butted up to the hole and put a homemade grill over the hole you cut for the sub? I don't see the problem. The grill opeing doesn't need to be exactly the same size as the driver in the Velo box. This could all be done in a couple of hours (including making grill frame and stapling the grill cloth over it - cloth available from your local Hancock fabricks). If you're happy with the Velo, there's zero reason why you can't use it!
The Velodyne has a slot-style port that is the width of the woofer box (18" wide x 20" tall), so if I cut the hole the full width of the stud bay, I would still be cutting off 3.5" of the port. Randy at Velodyne said not to do this. Plus I would have to cut the hole over 19" tall just to clear the top of the 15" woofer.....that's a big ass hole.

I see where you're coming from now, but I still don't see an insurmountable problem. If you cut the hole as wide as possible to accomodate the port width, the additional port opening that extends out past the opening (you said 3.5") can be split equally on each side of the opening so that only 1.75" is partially blocked on each side, if you butt the sub right up to the wall. However, I, like Randy would not do this either as it would change box tuning slightly. Here's the clincher - just back the box up a bit, like 2" away from the wall and you will no longer affect box tuning. As for the 20" height you need, big deal; you'll need nearly that much no matter what sub you stick there. Your custom grill frame will cover that up and make it disappear. ;)

I thought about doing that, but I was concerned that pulling it away from the wall a couple of inches would let some of the bass escape into the closet, and not force all of the sound into the room. I'll go ahead and give it a try since it's the only way to know for sure, and If it sounds bad I'll just build some custom boxes between the 2x4's and use my 12" ers.

Thanks.

Mike

Actually, I doubt that'll be much of a problem, but even if you wanted to be sure it wasn't, you could always assemble a simple shroud to go around the Velo box and butt up to the wall. With the sub backed off the wall, and the shroud cover forcing the sub to couple only with the room air, you'll have what you wanted, still without affecting box tuning. ;)
