Japan vs World is BD vs HD DVD?

Since Japan dont seem to be as receptive to HD DVD, as said due to recording ability. If HD DVD ends up being supported more in the rest of the world. I'm seriously wondering if BD will actually remain more of a Japan exclusive supported technology. Longer supported that is. I've seen this happen with MiniDisc... before that NEC's PC98 were very common compared to DOS/windows... LaserDisc vs VHS. At one time or another DVD-RAM, Fujitsu and Sony MO disc to me seemed more popoular than DVD-R, ZIP, CD-R. And maybe even betamax a bit, as competing technology seem to fade away much slower in Japan. More national pride of "Made in Japan" perhaps?

Ya know I can remember when they had HI-vision HI Def and it was an analog system and we came along and said we need a all digital system so i would bet they would not mind doing their own thing.
Only reason it was analog was because it was old. Yeah, in the 1990's the US said screw Hi-Vision! And I think in a similar manner to the Japanese, Zenith and RCA was thinkin "I bet we can maker a better system than the Japanese." Well they eventually shifted to to a Digital HiVision.

Though I dont feel much all that much pride for my native country... maybe that's why I own so many dead AV formats? I just cant let any format die. I even had a TV station I used to work for contact me decades after to see if I still had a working deck for Panasonic's old format "Omnivision". I said sure! Turns out they actually had a playback deck but all the "new" guys didnt know that the tapes needed to be rewound before the deck can eject the tape. They thought it was stuck:D
LOL. I hope you charged them a consultancy fee.
Yeah it seems Japan adopts stuff that fails here or makes things more popular that well, shouldn't be. PS2 vs xbox, the low sales of xbox 360, minidisc, etc. It does appear Japan looooooooves Sony and will support them regardless.
Toshiba are Japanese though.

If BD wins in Japan it'll swing things there way in the rest of the world too
I do find it a bit startling how little exposure HD-DVD is given here in Japan. I actually have to hunt down the HD-DVD displays when I go to electronic stores, even in Akihabara. Twice now, I've had to request that they set their players to 1080i to get the best picture possible. The players were set to 720p output on 720/768 displays, and we know how crappy the Toshiba's downrezzing is. As a result of blunders like this, I've heard lots of people griping that high definition discs "aren't that great." It will be interesting to see what kind of treatment BD gets when it's released. In this case, Blu-ray should have the advantage because there is already considerable awareness of the name due to the availability of recorders here for the past couple of years.

Maybe not as recording media market in JPN is much larger than the states. BD may have a better advantage storage space wise in JPN for recording MPEG2TS streams. That may be the case because of different market prices for prerecorded content at about 2x the price compared to the states for music and video formats.

While in the states DVR penetration is highest along with playback decks and prerecorded disc.

I have no problems with Sony or most any other brands. Sony is one of those world wide brands, like Nike, Mercedes, Coca-cola, IBM, etc. Remember there are lots of brands that do well in their own native country but not so well in others. Untill more recently take the brand "Sharp" they had some pretty darn good gear in Japan that never made it to the US. All of their really "crappy junk" was available in the states.

For sKorea when Goldstar first started producing for the international market their brand was considered really bad and cheap. They pretty much abandoned that brand because of a bad image thus was born LG. While some people still dont like LG, most folks dont think of it as crappy BargainMart Goldstar. Of course there was no such image in the native country.
